An Artesia man is in custody today on multiple charges stemming from a domestic assault incident that occurred late Saturday evening in the 300 block of Dallas Avenue.

Officers with the Artesia Police Department were dispatched just after midnight Sunday to the address in response to a distress call. Officers made contact with the victim, whom they observed to be suffering from a facial wound. Officers also observed multiple blood stains in the residence.

The victim advised officers the suspect, identified as Arturo Duarte, 28, had beaten her and had at one point held a knife to her throat. She told police Duarte would not allow her to scream for help. Duarte also reportedly dropped an infant he was holding at some point during the altercation.

The story was corroborated by a young child present at the time.

Duarte was arrested on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery against a household member, and false imprisonment.

He was scheduled Monday in Artesia Magistrate Court for a Dec. 2 preliminary examination.
