    Kidnapped cab driver recalls ordeal with California inmates

    WESTMINSTER, Calif. (AP) — A 74-year-old California taxi driver expected to die when an escaped jail inmate put a gun to his stomach and kidnapped him. But on Wednesday, the driver instead thanked the man for saving his life.

    Fight over hostage’s fate broke up California jail escapees

    SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — An inmate who led authorities on an eight-day manhunt after escaping from an Orange County jail got his trial on kidnapping and torture charges delayed Tuesday as his lawyer raised concerns about his ability to find an unbiased jury to hear the case.

    BONITA, Calif. (AP) — Neighbors in a well-to-do section of this San Diego suburb knew him as Frank Szeles, a friendly Cub Scouts leader who frequently gave swimming lessons to young children in his backyard pool.

    SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — Now that the three violent inmates who escaped from a California jail are back in custody, the focus will turn to how they were able to saw, crawl and climb their way out of a maximum-security facility.
