Summertime is one of my favorite seasons. We have such an abundance of it here in the vast desert that a person better learn to enjoy it, honestly.

I’ve found the art of cooking to be much like the art of life itself: There are a lot of ups and downs, and you have to be tough to hang in there. Let’s face it: One of the most daunting tasks of adult life is deciding what to eat three times a day, every single day, forever.

When I was a little girl, my sister decided to start raising litters of Boston Terrier puppies. When the first batch came along, I got to pick out a puppy for my very own.

Homemade Chamoy Sauce Ingredients: 3/4 cup dried apricots 1/2 cup prunes seeded 1/2 cup dried hibiscus flowers 3 cups water 6 Tbsp. homemade chili powder, chile piquin powder or even Tajin 1/4 cup white sugar 1/4 cup fresh lime juice Directions: In a medium saucepan, bring all ingredients (except the citrus juice) to a boil.

Names: Antonio, Jacai Ages: 14, 13 Their Story: Antonio loves to make people laugh. Although charismatic, Antonio appreciates one-on-one time with his caregivers. His favorite activities include playing with dogs and eating delicious foods. Antonio does well in environments where he’s allowed to ask questions and speak his mind. Jacai likes to be called “Jack.” He relishes being outdoors, prefers cowboy boots, and would like to ride a horse. Jack wants an active family that would foster his intrigue with the land.

The Artesia Senior Center hosted a series of oil painting classes June 3-7 with instructors Sandra Boulden and Betty Jo Allen. Above, Boulden led the class through the painting of Southwest pots. Below, Allen guided her students through the painting of a windmill with a mountain background.
