The Artesia Drug & Crime Coalition led a team of volunteers Friday in packing up a little love for children in New Mexico’s foster system. Responding to a call from Gov. Susana Martinez and the Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) asking local organizations to come together in support of the state’s children, the ADCC elected to take on a project to fill backpacks with items for foster youth. Several volunteers turned out to First Presbyterian Church, including members of Guardians of the Children Pecos Valley, parents and students involved in homeschooling, and individual citizens, and were able to quickly load 75 backpacks with teddy bears, blankets, baby items, crayons, and journals. “We received a good donation from a community member in Carlsbad and were able to purchase what we needed,” said Nancy Husselman, ADCC manager. “Everybody just pitched in and did what they needed to do, and it’s nice that these kids will get to have something that’s their very own.”
