A suspect was taken into custody after briefly barricading himself inside a local home following a shooting incident this afternoon.

Cmdr. Lindell Smith of the Artesia Police Department says the shooting left a male victim, approximately age 40, wounded in the hand and leg. He was airlifted to Lubbock, Texas, and is expected to survive.

The suspect in the shooting reportedly left the scene in a vehicle and drove to a residence on Washington Avenue between 12th and 11th streets, where he barricaded himself inside.

APD officers surrounded the home and were able to use a loudspeaker to talk the suspect into surrendering. He was subsequently arrested and transported to the Artesia Detention Center.

Smith says the suspect, whose name has not yet been released, was also wanted on two outstanding warrants. Charges are expected to be filed this evening or early Thursday, and further details will be reported as they become available. No other suspects are wanted in connection with the incident.
