The Hobbs Police Department has located and taken into custody a man suspected in a shooting death.
The incident occurred Thursday in the 1000 block of East Gypsy Street in Hobbs, where officers responded to a call of shots fired. Upon arrival at the scene, they found 35-year-old Darrell Griffin of Hobbs suffering from a gunshot wound.
Griffin was transported by EMS to Lea Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Witnesses told the HPD that a verbal argument between Griffin and Joshua Puente, 25, of Hobbs, had escalated into gunshots being fired. A warrant was subsequently issued for Puente’s arrest on an open count of murder.
Puente’s whereabouts were unknown until Friday afternoon, when the HPD received information that the suspect was hiding out in an abandoned residence in Hobbs. He was taken into custody without incident.
