WASHINGTON (AP) — Barring uncharacteristically swift work by Congress, more than a million victims of the recession will lose long-term unemployment benefits over the holidays, the price of milk could shoot up in late winter and government payments might fall sharply for doctors who treat Medicare patients.

On Wednesday, December 4, 2013, the House of Representatives passed a bill to weaken another section of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. The bill, titled the ” Small Business Capital Access and Job Preservation Act,” would exempt most private equity firms from a requirement in Dodd-Frank that fund managers register with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and disclose information that would help the government monitor systemic risk.
NEW YORK (AP) — In some versions of stories Dec. 3-5 about a train derailment in New York City, The Associated Press, relying on information from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, incorrectly reported the train did not have a safety device called an alerter. The MTA now says the train had one, but not in the car where the engineer was.
