Back when the Bowl Championship Series decided major college football’s champion, its defenders would talk about how it enhanced the regular season and how a larger playoff would take away from it.

Committee takes long view with playoff rankings

The first College Football Playoff rankings are in the books. The top four for now is Mississippi State, Florida State, Auburn and Mississippi, three teams from the SEC West and the defending national champion Seminoles.

College Football Playoff committee rankings Q&A

The College Football Playoff selection committee will unveil the first of seven top 25 rankings on Tuesday night, the first step toward setting the field for the national semifinals to be played New Year’s Day at Sugar Bowl in New Orleans and the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.
