With a continuing passion to be successful, head Bulldog track coach Mike Worley looks forward to this season's team.
Worley, who was named the New Mexico High School Association's Region Four Coach of the Year last season, gives all of the credit to his athletes.
"I don't even consider myself a head coach, because of how great these kids are," he said. "Plus, we have a superb coaching staff in every sport at Artesia High School."
Worley is in his sixth year as head coach of the Artesia Bulldog track team. He received his Bachelor's degree from Eastern New Mexico University in Portales in English/Literature, and received his master's degree from the University of Auburn in exercise science and physiology.
Worley has led the track team to three state championships in his six years as head coach. He has also led the team to four straight district championships.
"Lovington had a stranglehold on the district for 26 years, as they always won," he said. "But we finally came in and took over."
The Bulldogs track team will now be in district 4-4A, with Roswell, Goddard and Moriarty. Worley looks forward to the challenge.
"Moriarty will give us the most competition, but Roswell and Goddard will also do well," he said. "We're always ready for the challenge."
Worley is also a defensive coordinator for the Bulldog football team. Along with Randy Dickerson, Jeff Davis and Steve Huttanus, Worley puts a together a tenacious defense each season.
When asked about last season, Worley had this to say: "Its disappointing that we didn't get as far as we did, but our players fought through a lot of adversity, and every single week, they were competitive."
"We teach more in our program than just football. We teach a kid the good skills of life, and how to be a representable, decent person," said Worley. "These kids also did a great job representing Artesia."
Worley is also a part-time sports broadcaster for KSVP radio. He started about four years ago as a color commentary guy, but now has moved up to do his own games, especially during the school week.
"I really enjoy the whole broadcasting thing. I have really become a fan of the Lady Dogs this season, as they have fought hard every game," he said.
Worley used to take stats for Danny Parker, (a broadcaster for KSVP), but now does his own games.
Worley also loves living in Artesia. He feels kids should be really fortunate to live in such a distinguished community, and not to take advantage of what comes their way.
"Living in Artesia has been a great blessing," he said. "I mean, where else can you go in the state of New Mexico and find a high school program that is successful in almost every sport? Artesia is one of a kind."
"One of these days, they need to update the water tower west of town," said Worley. "When former Bulldogs and people pass through, they need to see the past state championships on the tower and find out what Artesia is all about."
Worley is an English teacher at Artesia High School. He is a man of many talents, including coaching, teaching, broadcasting, and just being a good overall person.
The Bulldog track team will kick off its season on March 9 at the West Texas Relays in Odessa.
