Martha Derrick is presented the Martha’s Fabric Day proclamation by Mayor Daniel Reyes, in honor of her 40 years in business on Main Street.

ARTESIA — Martha’s Fabric celebrates 40 years in business on Saturday.

In honor of that longevity, Mayor Daniel Reyes has proclaimed Saturday, March 23, as Martha’s Fabric Day and presented the proclamation to Martha Derrick.

The proclamation states that "Martha’s Fabric has not only provided us with fabric for marvelous creations, but she has also provided us with many fond memories, including sitting on those wooden chairs looking at pattern books and hiding from Mom among the fortress of fabric reams..."

The proclamation further states, "Whereas Martha has allowed us to tug at our threads of imagination to create eleaborate fashions and designs for all to adore; and

"Whereas Martha has always greeted her customers over the last 40 years with a warm welcome that developed friendships that will last a lifetime; and

"Whereas Martha’s Fabric was established in 1962 on Artesia’s Main Street and has remained a successful Main Street business for 40 years ... The City of Artesia would like to recognize Martha for her dedication to our community and commend Martha’s Fabric for its extended success ...

Martha’s Fabric was located in the 400 block of Main Street for years, but when the decision to construct the Yates Petroleum building in the 400 block was made more than a year ago, Martha’s Fabric moved to 508 W. Main St., where it remains today.

Reyes, in the proclamation, asks Artesia residents to commend Martha Derrick on her 40 years of business on Main Street.
