Roselawn Elementary Mrs. Gloria S. de Leòn takes time to give Jahnika Gunjardo a quick hug as students put away morning journals and prepare to learn word groups. She is teaching first grade at Roselawn Elementary School for the first time this year. Previously she worked for the Dexter Consolidated Schools. (First in a series about new school teachers in Artesia.) ARTESIA — This year, Mrs. Gloria de Leòn is working at Roselawn Elementary School as a first-grade teacher for the first time. But that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t know what it means to be a teacher. She said that as a teacher she believes in, "demonstrating compassion, responsibility and determination as I teach academic and social skills throughout the day." Her classroom and management skills also show as she prepares the children for their day with journals. When the students put their folders away, some take time to give the teacher a hug or ask questions. Before coming to Artesia Public Schools, Mrs. de Leòn worked for the Dexter Consolidated Schools teaching kindergarten from 1997 until the end of last year. She was born and raised in Artesia, gaining her bachelor’s degree in 1994 from ENMU-P. She has also just finished her master’s degree from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Ariz. She is married to Alfonso, who is presently retired. Mrs. de Leòn’s hobbies and extracurricular activities include reading, attending church functions and participating in the local reading council. |
