Dylan Franco, a fourth grade student at Roselawn Elementary School, poses Tuesday outside the school’s main entrance with a jar of change he collected to benefit the Red Cross’s disaster relief effort in Haiti. When Franco saw horrific pictures of the destruction in Haiti he decided to take action. “I felt sad. I looked around at my room and saw all the things I had. I thought the children in Haiti deserved to have that too,” said Franco. “It felt really good to do something good.” According to Principal Tina Pérez, Franco came into her office and explained his idea of helping the Haitians. She was immediately taken by his sincerity and the two began to plot how the school would help, she said. The result of the brainstorm was a letter, written mostly by Franco, which went home with each Roselawn student. After the letter was sent change poured in from the community, said Perez. The change has not yet been counted, but the jar weighs approximately 75 pounds and estimates on the amount collected range from $100 to $200.
