FISHING REPORT: No
reports of fishing activity this past week. The New Mexico Department of
Game and Fish has issued a mandatory catch-and-release rule for Brantley
Lake. The no-consumption order comes after high levels of DDT were found in
fish taken from the lake. The lake is open and safe for swimming and
boating.
A reminder to boaters that Brantley Lake has a weather
station where the current temperature, wind speed and wind direction can be
found. For wind and temperature conditions at Brantley Lake, call (505)
457-BOAT (2628) for an up-to-the-minute report.
Boat Tip: When
boating in winter, dress in layers and wear a PFD or Float Coat at all
times.
Park Tip: Explore
Brantley’s two-mile-long Wildlife Track Trail.
WEEKLY TOPICS
Camping: This is
a great time of year to visit Brantley Lake. The cold nighttime temperatures
combined with clear skies make star watching amazing.
Area Closure: The
Seven Rivers day-use area at Brantley Lake closed on Oct. 25 but will
re-open on March 15, 2008. This is only a seasonal closure. Boaters wishing
to access the lake via paved ramp can still access the main side of the park
by way of County Road 30. Primitive camping is still available on the main
side of the park, as well.
Good Luck to Shane
Phipps: Brantley Park Manager Shane Phipps, who has been at Brantley for
nine years, is moving on to new opportunities. The staff at Brantley Lake
State Park appreciate all his hard work over the years and wish him the best
of luck.
Wildlife:
Common Loons and Snowy Plovers have been spotted
in the Rocky Bay Primitive Area. For more information, contact Adrian
Stiteler at (575) 457-2384.
