What is a newspaper?

Most small-town newspapers are very public privately-owned companies.

Our mission is to publish the official public record of Artesia, NM.

The newspaper staff has a responsibility to print the truth, print it correctly, and present it properly.

The staff of the Daily Press takes this responsibility very seriously.

As of June, 2004, we've been part of Artesia for 50 years, we take pride in what we do, and we intend to continue.

A newspaper manufactures a brand new product every day (at least every publication day).
This product is scrutinized by our loyal readers. If we make a mistake, it is there in black and white for all to see, and can be passed around to our loyal readers' friends and acquaintances.

We try hard not to make mistakes.

Mistakes can happen; if they do, we run a correction as quickly as possible.

Almost anybody who reads the newspaper considers themselves capable of being its editor.
The exception is somebody who has tried it for a while.

One day in Deming, the editor of the Deming Headlight walked into the publisher's office and asked him "How the $*&% can I give these people what they want when they don't know what they want?"
His answer was "This is why we pay you the big bucks!"
