The Artesia City Council will meet tonight in regular session with another light agenda.
There are no public hearings on tonight’s agenda; however, the council is set to discuss an annexation resolution, which was postponed from the Jan. 12 council meeting as well as the mid-year budget adjustments.
During the Jan. 12 meeting, Community Development Director Tina Torres proposed an annexation resolution that would have granted Mayor Phil Burch permission to petition Gov. Bill Richardson for a Boundary Commission that would, in essence, force the annexation of six plots of privately owned land into the city limits.
Should the governor agree, the commission would then take the list of properties, send out publications and meet with property owners and then render a decision as to whether each piece of property should be annexed into the city limits. They can, but don’t necessarily have to, take into consideration the wishes of the property owners.
Not comfortable with making a decision at the time, on Jan. 12, the council opted to postpone passing the resolution until they could meet with the property owners and further discuss the possibility of annexation. Tonight, they will bring the information they gathered and render a decision as to whether or not to petition Gov. Richardson for a Boundary Commission and thereby possibly force the annexation of the six plots of land.
In other business, the council will also: discuss a memorandum of agreement between the Department of Homeland Security Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and the City of Artesia; discuss and possibly void the Bow Masters lease; and discuss and possibly pass a New Mexico Department of Transportation Aviation resolution. On the consent agenda, the council will vote to award a bid for primary legal services for the City of Artesia to McCormick, Caraway, Tabor and Byers of Carlsbad.
Tonight’s meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall, 511 W. Texas Ave. The meeting is open to the public.
