Helen Mariscal, left, and Sylvia Flores, right, of Yucca Healthcare look on Thursday afternoon as Mayor Phillip Burch signs a proclamation declaring April 2012 as Alcohol Awareness Month in Artesia. According to the proclamation, alcohol abuse is prevalent within many demographic groups. Nearly 100,000 people die each year from alcohol-related causes, including drinking and driving, fires, and alcohol-related homicides and suicides. It is critical that communities know that substance abuse is treatable, and by treating them like other chronic diseases, we can improve the entire community’s quality of life. Alcohol Awareness Month was established to provide Americans with information about the disease of alcoholism and the serious problem of alcohol abuse. Rob Larson – Daily Press
