Adams, Oliver 'Cob' - June 23 issue

Graveside services for Oliver 'Cob' Adams will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 27, at Woodbine Cemetery. Family members will serve as clergy.
Adams, 73, of 315 S. 39th St., passed away June 21 at his home.
Direct cremation has taken place under the direction of Terpening & Son Mortuary. No visitation is scheduled.
Adams was born on June 26, 1928, in Lakewood, to Thomas Adams and Maggie (Huffmon) Adams. He married Cleo Peden on May 16, 1966 in Juarez, Mexico. He was a longtime area resident and was owner/operator of Adams Construction. He was a member of D.A.V., and enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and traveling. He was a military veteran and served in Korea.
Survivors include: wife Cleo Adams of the family home; four sons, Richard Small and wife Melenie of Leitchfield, Maine, Melton Small of Hartville, Maine, Elton Huffmon and wife Kay of Roswell, and Onnie Huffmon and wife Karen of Alamogordo; three daughters, Myrna Lea Landrie and husband Billy of Artesia, Jodie Rutledge of Artesia and Cherry Carrell and husband Ray of Alamogordo; two brothers, Jackie Adams and companion June of Roswell and Johnny Adams and wife Virginia of Roswell; one sister, Anna Kathrine White and husband LeRoy of Roswell; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and three brothers.

Aguilar, Ismael P. - January 10 issue

A funeral mass for Ismael P. Aguilar of Hobbs will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, at St. Healena Catholic Church, with Father Dennis Fountain officiating. Burial will be at Prairie Haven Memorial Park, Hobbs.
A rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. today at St. Healena Catholic Church. Visitation is until 5 p.m. today at Chapel of Hope Funeral Home, 3321 N. Dal Paso, Hobbs.
Aguilar, 67, passed away Jan. 7 at his home. Chapel of Hope Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Aguilar was born Jan. 5, 1935, in Artesia to Raymondo and Natividad Aguilar. He married Apollonia Orona Aug. 29, 1981, in Hobbs.
Survivors include: wife Apollonia Aguilar of Hobbs; mother Natividad Aguilar of Hobbs; sons Jerome Aguilar and Mark C. Aguilar both of Artesia; Ivan K. Aguilar of Hobbs; Fabian D. Aguilar of Carlsbad and Michael Jason Aguilar of Hobbs; daughters Rosemary Fierro and Suzanne L. Valencia, and Audrey Saenz, all of Artesia; brothers Tony Aguilar of Hobbs, Manuel Aguilar of Albuquerque, Henry Aguilar of Hobbs and Abel Aguilar of Plano, Texas; 19 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Raymondo Aguilar.

Aguilar-Varela, Leticia Elena - April 2 issue

A funeral mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 3, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Roswell for Leticia Elena Aguilar-Varela of Roswell.
Aguilar-Varela, 14 days, was called home to become a heavenly angel on March 31.
Services will be conducted by Fr. Larry Schreiber, O.F.M., with interment to follow at South Park Cemetery.
Services are under the direction of Anderson-Bethany Funeral Home and Crematory of Roswell.
She was born on March 17 to Socorro Aguilar and Roberto Varela.
Survivors include: her parents, of Roswell; one half-brother, Roberto Varela, of Texas City, Texas; one half-sister, Lena Martinez, of Roswell; maternal grandparents Julian and Rita Aguilar of Artesia; and paternal grandparents Jose and Socorro Varela of Dexter.

Alcorn, Bert - January 15 issue

Graveside services are scheduled at 10 a.m., Thursday at Twin Oaks Memorial Park for Bert Alcorn of R350 S. 13th St.
Alcorn, 42, passed away Jan. 12 at Artesia General Hospital.
Services will be conducted by Rev. Leo Pennington with burial at Twin Oaks Memorial Park.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., Wednesday at Terpening & Son Mortuary.
Born June 6, 1959 in Artesia to Cyril J. Alcorn and Billie Merle (McCabe) Alcorn, he married Terri Lewis on Oct. 30, 1980 in Alamogordo.
Alcorn was a lifelong resident of Artesia and was a construction specialist for PVT.
He was also a member of the Eddy County Fair Board; North Eddy County Rodeo Board; volunteer firefighter for Sun Country and Atoka Fire Departments.
Survivors include his father, Cyril Alcorn of Artesia; mother Billie Mann of Maljamar; two sons, Travis and Coulter Alcorn of Artesia; one daughter, Renee Alcorn of Artesia; one sister, Raynell Smith of Artesia; numerous nieces and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers are: Jimmy Sanders, Marty Posey, Tommy Jones, Mark McAlister, Justin Montgomery, Bill Polk, Zach Simer, PVT coworkers, AMOCO coworkers and Eddy County Fair Board members.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the FFA Pardners school fund, in care of Artesia FFA, 1002 W. Richardson Ave.

Alvillar-Lease, Bertha - February 21 issue

Services were held Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002 at Las Cruces, N.M. for Bertha Alvillar-Lease of Las Cruces.
Lease was born January 28, 1954 in Las Cruces. She graduated from Las Cruces High School in 1972 and started her U.S. Government career at White Sands Missile Range as a clerk.
She continued to serve this country working at the Social Security Administration, then went to the INS as a clerk in Las Vegas, Nev. She became an immigration inspector in 1982, serving at Laredo, Texas. She was later promoted to supervisory immigration inspector and transferred to the Port of Entry, San Luis, Ariz.
In 1995, Lease was granted a medical retirement, then returned to the INS in 1997 as a supervisory immigration officer at the Immigration Officer Academy, Artesia, N.M. She was promoted to assistant chief, enforcement in 1998 where she served until her death on Feb. 18, 2002.
Survivors include her husband, Ralph Lease; step-children, Diana Jones, Monica Smith and Rafael Lease; three step-grandchildren; her mother, Guadalupe Garcia; her sister Minnie Fierro, both of Las Cruces; and her brother Robert Garcia of Phoenix, Ariz.
Lease was preceded in death by her father, Alexander Garcia and her son, Roberto Jose Alvillar.

Arango, Pauline Sampier - January 22 issue  Picture

Pauline Sampier Arango, 84, passed away on Jan. 18 at Mission Arch Care Center in Roswell. Arrangements and cremation are by Sunset Gardens of Carlsbad. No services are planned.
Arango was born in Hollis, Okla., on May 17, 1917, to Frank Russell and Effie Taylor Sampier. She was a graduate of Pea Ridge High School. She had been a model in New York City with Revlon, but spent much of her life in Panama and Washington, D. C., as the wife of the Panamanian Ambassador to the United States. She served on the Washington staff of Arkansas Congressman Bill Alexander. She also had worked for Cooper Communities in Bella Vista and for the State of Arkansas, in Little Rock.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother J. Wesley Sampier of Rogers and sisters Bonnie, Kora and Ruth.
Survivors include: one daughter, Paula Susan Arango of Roswell; one brother, Frank Sampier of Omaha, Neb.; three nephews, John Sampier of Rogers, John Freshour of Albuquerque and Larry Sampier of Omaha; a great-niece, Valerie Ledbetter Vaughn of Artesia; and a great-nephew, Russell Ledbetter of The Woodlands, Texas.

Ashton, Dorothy Bob 'Tess' Compary - March 19 issue  Picture

Closed-casket services for Tess Ashton will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, at Woodbine Cemetery, with the Rev. Don Johnston officiating.
Ashton, 79, of 712 Bullock Ave., passed away Saturday, March 16, at the Life Care Center in Scottsdale, Ariz., following a lengthy illness.
Ashton was born Sept. 19, 1922, in Shamrock, Texas, to Andy Robert Compary and Eula (Wooten) Compary. She married F. O. Ashton on July 25, 1944, at Hill Air Force Base, Ogden, Utah. He preceded her in death on Nov. 12, 2001.
The Compary family came to Artesia in 1926 where Mrs. Ashton attended school, graduating with the class of 1940. Following graduation, she attended business school in Lubbock, Texas. Mr. and Mrs. Ashton moved to Salem, Mot., in 1967, where they remained until 1975. He was a mechanical superintendent for Caminco Mine. Mrs. Ashton pursued her interests in antiques, duplicate bridge and acquiring expertise in the U.S. Stock Exchange.
Upon returning to Artesia, Mrs. Ashton provided the leadership for establishing a women's investment club, Flaky Dames, which was affiliated with the National Association of Investment Clubs (NAIC). For three consecutive years Mrs. Ashton was recognized by the NAIC for choosing the U.S. Growth company of the year. She was a business woman and entrepreneur, owning and operating AC Liquor Store, Dairy Queen and Artesia Discount Company with her longtime friend, Maxine Farmer. Duplicate bridge continued to be an intellectual challenge which she pursued for many years.
Survivors include: one son, Andy Franklin Ashton, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; one sister, Margaret Compary Worthington of Artesia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.

Autrey, Lois - June 14 issue

Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 15, at the Steed-Todd Chapel in Clovis for Lois Autrey of Texico.
Autrey, 69, passed away June 12 at her home.
Interment will follow the services at Texico Cemetery in Texico. Pallbearers will be grandsons Brandon Autrey, Ryan Autrey, Frankie Autrey, Bobby Autrey, Jay Duncan, Shawn Martin, Cody Martin and B.C. Martin.
Arrangements are under the direction of Steed-Todd Funeral Home of Clovis.
Autrey was born on Aug. 8, 1932, in Artesia to A.O. Fine and Media (Van Winkle) Fine. She married J.C. Autrey on July 31, 1955, in Artesia.
She was a homemaker and resident of Texico since moving there in 1956 from Mountainair.
Survivors include: four sons, Delford Martin of Artesia, Oran Jay and Bill Autrey, both of Texico, and Dale Wayne Autrey of Los Lunas; one stepdaughter, Alice Mae Duncan, of Texico; two brothers, Wimp Fine of Elida, N.M., and Delbert Fine of Roswell; three sisters, Sarena Archer of Artesia, Margaret Holt of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Norma Taylor of Killeen, Texas; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband on June 29, 1984, her parents, one stepson, Frankie Harold Autrey, and one grandson, Luther Bullington.

Ballou, Edna I. 'Jeneie' - March 29 issue

Graveside services are scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 30, at Carlsbad Cemetery for Edna I. 'Jeneie' Ballou of Carlsbad.
Ballou, 45, passed away March 27 at University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas.
Services will be conducted by Michael Joiner, of Hermosa Drive Church of Christ, and Roy Peterson.
Honorary pallbearers are Martin Sheperd, George Burkham, W.J. Burkham, Charles Burkham, Jeff Burkham, Shane Cannon, Ron Cannon, Mark Watts, Tommy Cox, Charles Brown, Roy Peterson, and J.J. Cannon.
Ballou will lie in state from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. today at Denton-Funchess Funeral Home in Carlsbad.
Ballou was born on March 10, 1957, in Carlsbad to Ennis Dee Burkham and Bessie Lorine (McClary) Burkham. She spent most of her life in Carlsbad and was a 1975 graduate of Carlsbad High School. She married James W. Ballou on Aug. 22, 1981, in Roswell.
She was a childcare provider in her home and attended Sunset Church of Christ. Her hobbies included cooking, sewing and small animals. She also enjoyed Indian art.
Survivors include: her husband, of Carlsbad; one daughter, Jacie Ballou, of the home; two step-daughters, Pamela Varon of Vienna, Va., and Carolyn Thomas of Virginia Beach, Va.; one brother, Dale Burkham and wife Gigi of Artesia; two sisters, Shirley Burkham of Winnemucca, Nev., and Janet Johnson and husband Bob of Roswell; and two step-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father on July 28, 1990, her mother on Nov. 14, 1990, and one brother, Stephen Dee Burkham, in 1998.

Barron, Rachel - April 2 issue  Picture

Graveside services are scheduled for 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 3, at Twin Oaks Memorial Park for Rachel Barron of 910 S. Sixth St.
Barron, 88, passed away March 30 at her home.
Services will be conducted by the Rev. Walt Isaacs.
Pallbearers will be Johnny Crouch, Justin Troublefield, Quentin Barron, James E. Wallace, Trampas Spence, Sam Bean, Mickey Bean and Dale Bean.
Visitation began at 10 a.m. today at Terpening & Son Mortuary.
Barron was born on Sept. 28, 1913, in Hill County, Texas, to Jackson Philander Wallace and Sarah Ollie (Myers) Wallace. She came to Artesia in 1942 from Clovis and married Hugh W. Barron on Nov. 18, 1947, in Carlsbad.
She was a housewife and a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include: one son, Ronald F. Barron and wife Mary Lea, of Artesia; one daughter, Karla R. Molyneaux and husband Mike, of Artesia; one brother, Quincy Wallace, of Artesia; one sister, Monet Bean, of Artesia; four grandchildren, Suzanne Barron and Vicki Spence, both of Artesia, Quentin Barron of Carlsbad, and Johnny Crouch of Lubbock, Texas; and five great-grandchildren, Justin Troublefield and Lindsey Spence, both of Artesia, and Dallas, Delany and Jacey Crouch.
She was preceded in death by her husband on March 6, 1996, three brothers, five sisters, one daughter-in-law, Nancy Barron, and one grandson, David Carlile.

Bean, Bina Ann 'Beanie' - March 8 issue

Memorial services are scheduled for 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 9, at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Albuquerque, and at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 16, at Glory Christian Fellowship in Albuquerque for Bina Ann 'Beanie' Bean of Albuquerque.
Bean, 65, passed away March 6.
Cremation has taken place, and, at Bean's request, her ashes will be interred in her family plot at Woodbine Cemetery. A date has not yet been determined.
Bean was born on Oct. 23, 1936, in McCamey, Texas, to Orville and Minnie Bean. She was raised in Artesia.
She worked as a registered Medical Technologist for 35 years in clinics and small hospitals in Santa Rosa, Belen, Albuquerque, and Ottawa, Kans., until her retirement due to health problems. She was registered since 1958 with the American Society of Medical Technologists. She was proudest of her work at the Santa Rosa Hospital in the 1960s and with the state association of Medical Technologists. She won the A.M.I. Distinguished Achievement Award in 1968.
Bean had incredible stamina in battling her many health problems, which included polio, diabetes and several bouts with cancer, which was ultimately the cause of her death.
Survivors include her kids, Jolynn, John and Jerry Galvin, and Steven Hooper, and her grandson, Patrick Hooper, all of whom she considered her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

Beisiegel, Greta Ruppert - March 21 issue

Services are scheduled at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 22, at Alderson Funeral Home, 615 South Main Street, Cheshire, Conn., for Greta Ruppert Beisiegel of Cheshire, Conn.
Beisiegel, 82, passed away Wednesday, March 20, in Rio Rancho, N.M.
New Mexico arrangements are under the direction of French Mortuary Westside Chapel, 9300 Golf Course Rd. NW. Connecticut arrangements are under Alderson Funeral Home in Cheshire, Conn.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, March 22, at Alderson Funeral Home, 615 South Main Street, Cheshire, Conn. Interment will follow at New Pine Grove Cemetery in Waterbury, Conn., where she will be laid to rest with her beloved husband Gerald 'Doc' Ruppert.
Beisiegel was born May 22, 1919 in Davenport, Iowa. She married Dr. Gerald P. (Doc) Ruppert on January 3, 1938. Dr. Ruppert preceded her in death and she married William Beisiegel who also preceded her.
Beisiegel was a Master Life Goren Bridge instructor and a world renowned master bridge player, and lecturer having been trained by Mr. Charles Goren.
Beisiegel was the first bridge instructor in New Mexico to be certified by Mr. Charles Goren.
She has played bridge with Charles Goren, Omar Shariff, and many other world famous bridge players.
Beisiegel taught bridge beginning in Artesia and Roswell, N.M. She taught bridge at New Mexico Military Institute, Roswell Downtown Lions Club in Roswell, Artesia Women's Club and Hope, Bridge Club.
After she and Dr. Ruppert moved to Connecticut she taught bridge on the Cunard Princess Cruise Lines, Renaissance Cruise Lines and on two world cruises on the Queenie 2.
She has published four bridge books and is listed in Who's Who of American Women.
Beisiegel was also an artist working in Chinese Dry brush, Repose, and 'Renaissance Decoupage.' She also taught art classes on cruise ships.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Michele Ann and Gerald Jackson of Atlanta, Ga.; son and daughter-in-law, James G. and Shirley Ruppert of Nashville, Tenn.; daughter, son-in-law, Patricia and Fred Van Winkle of Rio Rancho, N.M. and daughter and son-in-law, Sequoia and Lee Zook of San Diego, Calif. Beisiegel has 13 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren.

Bell, Leatha Odessa - May 30 issue

Graveside services are scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 1, at South Park Cemetery in Roswell for Leatha Odessa Bell of Roswell.
Bell, 85, passed away May 29 at the Artesia Good Samaritan Center.
Services will be conducted by Wayne Bedingfield.
Bell was born on April 6, 1917, in Garvin County, Okla., to William Isaac McCarty and Julia (Rhodes) McCarty. She married Pat Bell on Feb. 20, 1935, in Oklahoma.
She was a homemaker and a long-time resident of Roswell. She was also a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include: one daughter, Shirley Ring, of Artesia; one sister, Irene Sheppard, of Byron, Texas; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband on June 12, 1993, her parents, four sisters, one brother, and one grandson.

Belvin, Ruby Donnie - February 3 issue

Services for Ruby Donnie Belvin, 83, of Clovis, will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at The Chapel, 1500 N. Thornton St., Clovis, with Curtis Tabor officiating.
Belvin passed away Feb. 1 at Plains Regional Medical Center, Clovis.
Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. at Acme Cemetery, Chaves County, N.M. Muffley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers are grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers are Raymond Reeves, Lyndon Huckaby, Jimmy Darren Messenger.
She was born Feb. 28, 1918, at Grosevenor, Texas, to Charlie B. and Lillie R. Pence Griffin. She married Doyle Belvin May 4, 1936, in Roswell. She was a homemaker, master quilter, family and community historian and a seamstress in Artesia. She came to Clovis in 1995 and was a resident at the Senior Citizen Resident Center.
Survivors include: four sons, Stanley Belvin of Montgomery, Texas, Jim Belvin of Balko, Okla., Bill Belvin of Albuquerque and Richard Belvin of Muleshoe, Texas; three daughters, Wanda Johnson of Oklahoma City, Okla., Sharon Smith of Artesia and Peggy Gordon of Tulsa, Okla.; three brothers, Boyd Griffin of Lovington, Texas, John Griffin of Paradise, Texas, Frank Griffin of Sunset, Texas; two sisters, Eula Sowder and Jewel George, both of Roswell; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, both parents, one brother and seven sisters.

Bennett, John 'Jack' Collins - March 10 issue  Picture

Services for John 'Jack' Collins Bennett will be at 10 a.m. Monday, March 11, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Rick Sullivan officiating. Burial will be at Twin Oaks Memorial Park.
Bennett, 90, passed away March 6 at Artesia Good Samaritan Center.
Pallbearers will be Shawn Geary, Heath Geary, Tony Johnson, Ben Horand, Mike Simons and Paul Hudson. Honorary pallbearers are: David Simons, Dr. Johnny Moreno, Dr. Owen Taylor, Carl A. Lane and all fishing and coffee drinking buddies.
Bennett was born June 12, 1911, in Jasonville, Ind., to John Scott Bennett and Estelle (Noel) Bennett. He married Irene Clayton June 18, 1932, in Hammond, Ind. She preceded him in death Feb. 23, 1982. His second wife was Lorena Land, whom he married Sept. 15, 1982, in Artesia.
Bennett came to Artesia in 1951 from Clinton, Ind. He was a supervisor in the potash mines. He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and was a member of Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include: wife Lorena of the home; three daughters, Janice Bennett and husband Ronald Johnson of Cottonwood, Ariz., Judith Schroeder and husband Bill of Willow Springs, Mo., and Jacquie Geary and husband Max of Clayton; one stepson, Carl Lane and wife Ann of Colorado Springs, Colo., 12 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and four sisters.

Blechinger, Robin Kent - April 7 issue  Picture

Memorial services are scheduled for 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 9, at the Door of Opportunity for Robin Kent Blechinger of 914 Bullock Court.
Blechinger, 44, passed away April 1 at Artesia General Hospital.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Terpening & Son Mortuary. No visitation is scheduled.
Blechinger was born on Sept. 25, 1957, in Albuquerque to Harry J. Blechinger and Celia (Goodsell) Blechinger.
He came to Artesia in 1981 from various institutions around New Mexico. He worked in laundry personnel for the FLETC, at the Artesia Good Samaritan Center, and as a crossing guard at Yeso Elementary.
He was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include: his parents, of Las Cruces; and one sister, Lisa Kim, of Moses Lake, Wash.

Bowman, Linda N. - May 21 issue

Graveside services for Linda N. Bowman are scheduled for 2 p.m.. Wednesday, May 22, at Woodbine Cemetery. The Rev. Jean Riley will officiate.
Bowman, 56, of 5412 W. Dallas Ave., passed away May 18 at Artesia General Hospital.
Visitation began at 10 a.m. today at Terpening & Son Mortuary.
Bowman was born Dec. 15, 1945, in Roswell, to Johnny Casabonne and Nell (Lange) Casabonne. She married Steve Bowman April 27, 1970, in Carlsbad. She was a lifelong resident of the Artesia and Hope area. She was a homemaker and member of First Methodist Church of Hope.
Survivors include: husband Steve Bowman, of the family home; mother Nell Casabonne of Hope; one stepson, Richard Bowman of Enterprise, Okla.; one stepdaughter, Brenda Benson,, Enterprise, Okla.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father in 1993.

Bowman, Norman Earl - January 15 issue

Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 17, at Edge Park United Methodist Church in Fort Worth, Texas, for Norman Earl Bowman of Arlington, Texas.
Bowman, 62, passed away Jan. 13 in an Arlington hospital.
Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at Moore Funeral Home in Arlington. Graveside services will begin at 3 p.m. on Thursday at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas.

Bowman was born on July 13, 1939, on a farm near Artesia to Johnnie and Lois Bowman. He graduated from Artesia High School in 1958 and enlisted in the Army in June of 1959, spending two years on active duty.
He married Karen Fore Arvizu on May 24, 1974, in Oklahoma City and has resided in Arlington since 1976. He was a lifetime salesman and worked the past year as a greeter at Wal Mart. He also served as the chair of the Democratic Precinct No. 2319 for 17 years.
Survivors include: his wife, of the family home; one stepson, Ralph Arvizu and wife Kim; three sisters, Marie Wesley, Carol Boyd and husband Michael, and Grace Hotze and husband Rich; two granddaughters; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of cousins.

Boyce, 76, passed away Feb. 13 at Carlsbad Medical Center.

Pallbearers will be Dyke Browning, Myke Browning, Robert W. Boyce, Nicholas Orona, Ernie Hegwer and Darryl Ward.

Boyce was born on Nov. 29, 1925, in Charlie, Texas, to William Lee Boyce and Hattie Alzina (Wright) Boyce.
She came to Artesia in 1927 from Wichita Falls, Texas, and worked as a receptionist for Dr. Louis F. Hamilton for 26 years.
She enjoyed league bowling, arrowhead hunting and collecting, and rock work.
It is said that she never had children of her own, but in reality she had so many that they cannot be named. Those are her nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews, who will forever feel thankful and blessed for having her in their lives.
Boyce will be remembered for her selflessness and for dedicating herself to caring for others in both her professional and personal life.
Survivors include: two brothers, Troy Boyce and wife Lamora, and Robert D. Boyce and wife Betty, all of Artesia; three sisters, Ava Lee Hegwer and husband Paul of Artesia, Linda Bland and husband Don of Hobbs, and Billie Fox of Carlsbad; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Carl William Boyce and Frank Victor Boyce, and one sister, Hattie LaJune Ward.

Brady, Steven 'Glen' - June 25 issue  Picture

Brady, 51, passed away June 24 at his home.
Services will be conducted by Pastor Dan Sanders of Pagosa Springs, Colo., and Rev. Mark Robinson. Interment will follow at Woodbine Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Ray Brady, Jay Brady, Bert Brady, Mike Brady, Ron Brady and Don Brady. All other nephews and nieces will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Brady was born on Feb. 28, 1951, in Hagerman to William Harrison Brady and Ocie Mae (Howell) Brady. He married Ann Bradshaw on Nov. 29, 1969, in Juarez, Mexico.
He was a resident of Artesia until 1980, when he moved to Odessa, Texas, where he resided until 1996. He also resided in Pagosa Springs, Colo., from 1996-2001, and returned to Artesia in November of 2001.
He worked as a supervisor for Phillips Petroleum for 20 years.
He was a member of the West Main Baptist Church and worked with 4-H clubs, the Odessa Riding Club, the Mesquite Team Penners, AQHA and the Sandhills Rodeo Association.
Survivors include: his wife, of the family home; three daughters, Tammy Heard and husband Darren of Lubbock, Texas, Glenna Turner and husband John of Las Vegas, Nev., and Amanda Brady of Artesia; six brothers, Morgan Brady and wife Glenna of Kingman, Ariz., Will Brady and wife Darlene of Midland, Texas, Robert Brady and wife Louise of Kennewick, Wash., Marion "Pete" Brady and wife Patty of Ignacio, Colo., and Bill Brady and wife Coy and John Brady and wife Gail, all of Roswell; four sisters, Ellen Dolinger of Bristol, Virg., Barbara Wells and husband Charles of Nashville, Tenn., and Lela Spear and husband Ed and Kathy Hatch and husband Robert, all of Roswell; four grandchildren, Joshua Brady, Kyla and Krista Armstrong and Brianna Heard, all of Lubbock; numerous aunts and uncles; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Bueno, age 90, died May 23, 2002 at Good Samaritan Village in Hobbs, N.M.
Services will be conducted by Fr. Virgilio Flores of Our Lady of Grace with burial at Woodbine Cemetery. Pallbearers are family members.
Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Monday, May 27 at Terpening & Son Mortuary. A rosary will be recited at Our Lady of Grace at 6:30 p.m. on Monday.
Born Oct. 1, 1911 in Tularosa, N.M. to Marcos and Virginia (Vias) Bueno, he married Geneva Tesillo on Oct. 26, 1940 in Carlsbad, N.M. She preceded him in death Dec. 16, 2001.
Bueno came to Artesia in 1941 from Tularosa and was a farm laborer.
He was also a member of Our Lady of Grace Church and was a head start grandfather for 12 years.
Survivors include three sons, Joe, Jr. of Denver, Colo., Pete of Hobbs and Tino of Artesia; four daughters, Connie Delgado, Virginia Ruiz and Beatrice Madrid, all of Artesia and Mabel Countz of Wichita, Kan.; 23 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren.
Bueno was preceded in death by his parents and by a sister, Mary Barela.

Burke, Hubert Wilson - February 19 issue  Picture

Hubert Wilson Burke died February 12, 2002 in Blaine Manor, Hailey, Idaho of an extended illness. He was born November 19, 1913 in Statesville, N.C., the eldest of the nine children, two of whom died in infancy, of Flake Turner Burke and Jim Due Dobbs.
At the age of five, the family moved to Portales, New Mexico, the childhood home of his mother, where he would receive the majority of his education. He graduated from Eastern New Mexico University as a charter member of both the junior college and then the four year university and later returned to receive his master's degree.
Except for his service in the Navy during WWII as a communications officer aboard a minesweeper his major career was that of a schoolteacher in New Mexico where he taught 25 of his total 30 years in Artesia, New Mexico.
In 1948 he met and married the new high school English teacher, Mary Eunice Bishop, after a five week courtship. Their only child was born the following year. Upon completion of the new Zia Junior High School he transferred there. In the summer of 1957, he was awarded a National Science Foundation scholarship in engineering and mathematics from Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana. The following summer he began his second career as a seasonal park ranger at Carlsbad Caverns National Park.
He retired from teaching in May of 1972 and in May of 1973 after retiring from the National Park Service, moved to Carey, Idaho to be near his only child Jimmie Aralena and family.
He was active in many community activities and served in leadership positions in many organizations wherever he lived for as long as he was able, among them: Toys for Tots, the Optimist Club, Methodist Men, American Legion, Carey Cemetery Board and Library Board. He was always helping out at all of the school sporting events, attending as many junior high and high school games as possible in both Artesia and Carey with football being his favorite sport, though he, himself, was a member of the Portales High School Marching Band which was awarded the honor of representing the state at the 1930 World's Fair in Chicago.
The love of his life was his family and he spent many hours working on his home, yard and flower garden even while working year round and for as long as he was able after his stroke. He also spent a great deal of time with his grandchildren He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed by all of his family.
He is survived by his wife Mary Eunice, daughter Jimmie Aralena and son-in-law Robert Simpson of Carey; granddaughters Robbie (Martin Romero), Kaysville, UT and Lt. Jamie Simpson, Clovis, NM; brother, Harry (Mary Lena) Burke, Portales, NM; sisters Mary (Tom) Morgan, Friendswood, TX, Elizabeth Overstreet, Ft. Worth, TX, and Eulalia, (Reverend Gordon) Phillips, Oakville, Ontario as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Flake (Shirley) Burke, Jr. (Phoenix, AZ) and Frank (Zella) Burke, Clovis, NM.
Cremation took place under the direction of the Wood River Chapel in Hailey, Idaho. A graveside service will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to Blaine Manor, P. O. Box 927, Hailey, Idaho and wishes to express their gratitude for the compassionate care received from doctors, nurses, and staff at the Hailey Medical Clinic, Wood River Medical Center (now St. Luke's) and Blaine Manor over the years.

Butler, 83, passed away Feb. 13 at his home.

Butler was born on Nov. 23, 1918, in Rosiclare, Ill., to Thomas J. Butler and Elsie (Patterson) Butler.
He came to Artesia in the 1990's from Elwood, Ill., and worked as a laborer in the construction industry.

Campbell, 86, passed away Jan. 14 at Manor Care Heights in Albuquerque.

Born May 19, 1915 in Cross Plains, Texas to Ecil Mayes and Jessie (Thorne) Mayes, she married Charles W. Campbell on Oct. 4, 1937 in Abilene, Texas.
Campbell came to Artesia in 1939 from Texas and was a server at the cafeteria in Artesia.
She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Sylvia and husband Sidney Mills of Albuquerque; one son, Ken and wife Joy Campbell of Santa Fe; one niece, Evelyn and husband George Hukill of Leisure World, Texas; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Campbell was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Carder was born on Jan. 12, 1911, in Artesia to Harry Russell Carder and Georgia Eldora (Caldwell) Carder. He married Evelyn Dixon on April 30, 1933, in Artesia.
He was a lifelong resident of Artesia and a retired Shift Foreman A operator with Navajo Refining.
He was also a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and was a sergeant in the New Mexico State Guard.
Survivors include: one son, Ronald L. Carder, of Albuquerque; two daughters, Virginia Carder Nicolai of Redmond, Wash., and Mary Jo Carder Tolan of Artesia; one sister, Edna Heckel, of Artesia; one brother-in-law, Herbert Howell, of Artesia; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife on March 25, 1990, his parents, one daughter, Patrecia Margaret Carder Ferriman, one brother, Lawrence Carder, and one sister, Lorene Howell.

She married Brodie Burl Caudle on Nov. 22, 1945, in Breckenridge, Texas, and came to Artesia on May 2, 2002, from Hobbs. She was a retired public school teacher in Juno, Texas. She was also a member of Taylor Memorial Baptist Church and an adult literacy volunteer.

She was a homemaker, mother and member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.

She was a housewife, Head Start grandparent, and a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.
Survivors include: one son, Juan F. Chavez and wife Rita of Artesia; five grandchildren, Susan Molina and husband Abelino, and Juanita Hernandez and husband Pete, all of Artesia, Socorro Olivas of Dallas, Texas, Ramon Cruz, Jr. and wife Nancy of Hobbs, and Marina Mahan of Roswell; 18 great-grandchildren; 33 great-great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-great-grandchildren.

He was a member of West Main Baptist Church and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Davis was born Aug. 4, 1956, in Duncan, Okla., and was a student of Artesia schools. She graduated high school in Silver City and was a graduate of Tulsa Junior College. She was owner of Interstate Management and Accounting, Inc., of San Diego.

Durbin, 82, of 1311 W. Grand Ave., passed away Jan. 23 at Campbell Hospital in Weatherford, Texas.
Graveside veteran's services will be held at Woodbine Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at Terpening & Son Mortuary.
Pallbearers are Steve Stewart, Bubba Stewart, Tracy Smith, Dean Smith, David Holloway and Steve George. Honorary pallbearers are Benny Mason, Lewis Means, Allen Mills, Jay Scroggin, J. D. Roberts, Dr. Henry Wall, Clyde Tidwell, Mervin Tidwell and Cliff Perkins.
Durbin was born April 16, 1919, in Ennis, Texas, to Marlin Durbin and Maude (Whitfield) Durbin. He married Ruth Alene Owen in 1940 in Artesia. He came to Artesia in 1929 in an old Chevrolet — the car had nine flats and needed a valve job and a set of rings. Durbin was a car salesman at Guy Chevrolet from 1940 to 1987. He was a graduate of Artesia High School in 1940.
Durbin was a member of First United Methodist Church, International Toastmasters, Kiwanis, Artesia Chamber of Commerce, VFW, DAV, American Legion, NRA, Quarter Horse Association, Legion of Leaders with Chevrolet, Buick and Olds, Sams RV Club and the Lions Club.
He served with the Marine Corps in World War II.
Survivors include: wife Ruth Alene Durbin of Weatherford, Texas; one son, Michael Larry Durbin of Phoenix, Ariz.; one daughter, Sandra Durbin Smith of Brownwood, Texas; four sisters, Bernice George, of Artesia, Carrie Snyder of Lubbock, Texas, Jo Holloway of Okmulgee, Okla., and Margie Ellis of Okmulgee, Okla.; five grandchildren, Deborah Stewart of Weatherford, Texas, Barton Dean Smith of Gatesville, Texas, Tracy Lane Smith of Sedan, Kans., Dee Dee Brauer of Clearwater, Fla., and Denice Durbin of Phoenix, Ariz.; 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

Edwards, 68, passed away March 11 at his home.
He will lie in state from 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. on Friday, March 15, and from 9 a.m. - Noon on Saturday, March 16, at Denton-Funchess Funeral Home in Carlsbad.
Edwards was born on May 9, 1933, in Garfield, N.M., to William R. Edwards and Dorotha Mae (Stephens) Edwards. He grew up in the Hobbs and Artesia areas.
He worked most of his life as a mining blaster in Grants, Albuquerque, Carlsbad, California and other areas. He traveled extensively and was a Baptist by faith.
His hobbies included exploring for caves and old gold mines.
Survivors include: four sisters, Selma Garrett of Alamogordo, Mavis Harrington of Tennessee, and Lona Lent and Joy Fuson, both of Carlsbad.

Everett, 87, of 1510 W. James St., passed away Jan. 3 at his home.
He was born June 24, 1914, in Scanlan, Miss., to Ernest Benton Everett and Bertha Grace (Hollingsworth) Everett. He married Patricia Storr Feb. 23, 1957 in York, England. He came to Artesia in 1963 from Odessa, Texas. He was a custodian at Artesia High School. He was of Baptist denomination and was an Air Force veteran, having served in World War II.
Survivors include: wife Patricia of the family home; one son, William Lloyd Everett and wife Cindy of Artesia; two brothers, Clyde Everett of Orangevale, Calif. and Jerry Everett of Arlington, Texas; two sisters, Lorene Olsen of Canyon, Texas and Wanda Truett of Marble Falls, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James Lloyd Everett.

Fierro, 79, passed away Feb. 23 at University Medical Center in Albuquerque.

Fierro was born on May 1, 1922, in Picacho, N.M., to Vicente Florez and Genoveva (Pineda) Florez. She came to Artesia in 1931 from Picacho and married Felix Fierro on Jan. 3, 1944.
She was a housewife and member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church and the San Jose Society.
Survivors include: her husband, of the family home; three sons, Tony and Sammy Fierro and Felix Fierro, Jr., all of Artesia; two daughters, Lupe Atencio of Albuquerque, and Christina Grado of Artesia; two sisters, Reynalda Aguilar and Ofelia Orosco, both of Artesia; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, and five sisters.

Flores was born April 11, 1931, in San Juan, Chihuahua, Mexico, to Lalo Montez and Inez (Salazar) Montez. She married Francisco Flores Jan. 26, 1951, in Presidio, Texas. He preceded her in death Dec. 2, 1976. She came to Artesia from Malaga in 1963 and was a dishwasher at La Fonda Restaurant and a homemaker. She was a member of Spanish Assembly of God.
Survivors include: two daughters, Luz Maria Wells and Rosa Wells, both of Artesian; 6 sons, Juan Manuel Munoz of Ojinaga Mexico, Francisco Flores Jr., of Alamogordo, Ben Flores of Roswell, Jose Flores of Lovington, and George Flores and Harvey Flores, both of Artesia; several brothers and sisters; 19 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Ford, Ruby Jewel 'Judy' - June 18 issue

Ford, 85, passed away June 14, 2002, in Las Cruces.
Ford was born on November 1, 1916, in Oklahoma to Walter Ford and Clara (Gillespie) Ford. She came to Artesia in 1948.
She was a longtime elementary school teacher at Atoka and Hermosa schools. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Assoc. of Retired Teachers.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Oleta Ford Bullock and her brother, Herman Ford.

France, 85, passed away March 14 in Roswell.

Gaddy, John Thomas - January 15 issue

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. today at South Park Cemetery in Roswell for John Thomas Gaddy of Truth or Consequences.
Gaddy, 81, passed away on Jan. 10 at the New Mexico Veteran's Center in Truth or Consequences.
Services were conducted by Dr. Onsy Whicker of Tabernacle Baptist Church. Military Rites were conducted by the Roswell Honor Guard.
Gaddy was born on Aug. 5, 1920, in Ardmore, Okla., to Frank and Claudia Gaddy. He and his family moved to Roswell in 1927. He was a graduate of Roswell High School and a Roswell resident until 1993, when he moved to Truth or Consequences.
He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church from 1948 until his death and was also a GI. His military experience began in the New Mexico National Guard. During World War II, he rose to the rank of sergeant, serving in Italy and North Africa with the 804th Tank Destroyer Battalion. For heroically and successfully completing a mission despite being wounded in combat, he was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. In the years afterward, he helped to organize yearly reunions of the 804th and served as both secretary and treasurer of the group.
After the war, he returned to Roswell to continue service in the National Guard and began working at Sears Roebuck, where he met his wife, Louise Hamilton. They were married on Feb. 7, 1948.
He also worked for more than 30 years as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, serving at various times as president, vice president and steward of the National Letter Carriers Union. After his retirement, he ran an alfalfa farm northeast of Roswell.
He enjoyed raising his family and loved to hunt and fish.
Survivors include: two sons, Greg Gaddy and wife Melanie of Artesia, and Mark Gaddy of San Angelo, Texas; two daughters, Peggy Daniel and husband Jim of Austin, Texas, and Kara Armijo and husband Ed of Kent, Wash.; and six grandchildren, Christina and Shanda Gaddy, Nathan and Evan Daniel, and Ardena and Adam Armijo.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents and one brother.

Gallegos, Guadalupe Orosco - February 21 issue

Services are scheduled on Feb. 26 at the Rose Hills Mortuary in Glendora, Calif. for Guadalupe Orosco Gallegos.
Gallegos, age 77, died Feb. 18, 2002 in California.
He will be interred at Riverside National Cemetery with full military honors.
Born June 29, 1924 in Roswell, N.M., he came to Artesia in the 1940s. He owed Altura Furniture in the 1950s, then was employed at Gamble's until 1961 when he moved to California.
He was a World War II veteran, businessman and music promoter.
Survivors include eight children: Yolanda Roacho; Juan Jose of Sparks, Nev.; Lorena, Alfredo, Jaime, Ricardo and Javier Gallegos all of southern California; Linda Cox of Margate, England; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by three sisters; Ermalinda Garver, Domi Corday and Lucia Gleason.
Gallegos was preceded in death by his mother, Eloisa Juarez, owner of the Juarez Cafe in Artesia.

Garcia passed away Jan. 18 in Tucson.
She was born Aug. 19, 1939. in Black River Village, west of Malaga.

Garcia, 74, passed away May 11 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Garcia was born on Aug. 26, 1927, in Terlingua, Texas, to Luis Garcia and Felipa (Aguirre) Garcia. They later moved to Artesia, where Garcia attended school until leaving to fight for his country in the Korean War.
He married Eva Salgado on July 16, 1955, in Marfa, Texas, and they made their home in Odessa.
He was a retired operator for El Paso Products and a U.S. Army Third Infantry veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include: his wife, of the family home; three sons, Charlie Garcia and wife Linda, Ceferino 'Billy' Garcia, Jr., and Joe Garcia, all of Odessa; two daughters, Maryann Rodriguez and husband Ruben, and Nelda McGuire and husband David, all of Odessa; two brothers, Felix and Isabel "Chato" Garcia, both of Artesia; four sisters, Isabel Trevino, Feliciana Huerta and Margie Rodriguez, all of Artesia, and Flora Garcia of Pittsburg, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was a housewife and member of First United Methodist Church and the B.P.O. Does.
Survivors include: three daughters, Patricia Nelms of Hagerman, Jonell Howell of Austin, Texas, and Lynette Fry of Artesia; one brother, Ronald Gene Gray, of San Angelo, Texas; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her second husband on Jan. 29, 1973, her parents, one son, Stanley L. Jones, Jr., and two grandchildren, Ricky Nelms and Amanda Jo Howell.

Glass passed away at her home in Spokane, Wash., March 5. She moved to Roswell in 1945 from Brock, Okla., and resided in Roswell until moving to Spokane in 1991.
She was born Sept. 26, 1926, in Brock to Walter Harden and Nina Thompson Copeland. She was married in Roswell to Bill Glass in 1948. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a great-grandchild; a sister and brother-in-law, Lenoy and Hubert Arp; and a sister-in-law, Alice Copeland.
Survivors include: son Larry Glass and wife Connie, of Spokane; two brothers, David Copeland and Don Copeland and wife Betty, all of Roswell; a sister, Nina Shannon and husband Mutt, of Artesia; three grandchildren, Cheryl Marie Williams of Albuquerque, San and Sarah Glass of Spokane; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gonzales, 98, passed away Feb. 13 at Artesia Good Samaritan Center.

Gonzales was born on July 17, 1903, in Ojinaga, Mexico, to Wenceslado Gonzales and Angelita (Franco) Gonzales.
He came to Artesia in 1922 from Loving and married Antonia Ochoa on Dec. 31, 1924.
He worked in customer service at Hart Motor Co. and Ford Motor Co. until his retirement in 1975. He was also a member of Primera Iglesia Bautista, Men's Brotherhood, and was a Sunday School teacher.
Survivors include: two sons, Louis O. Gonzales and wife Ruth of Arlington, Texas, and Isauro O. Gonzales and wife Della of Albuquerque; six daughters, Angelita G. Alvarado and husband Ismael of Artesia, Amelia Juarez and husband Cruz of El Paso, Texas, Rebecca Fierro of Costa Mesa, Calif., Margaret Juarez and husband Andres of Albuquerque, Elmira Mendiola of Santa Fe, and Mary Madrid and husband Jim of Santa Cruz, N.M.; 31 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Granado was born on March 6, 1929, in Winslow, Ariz., to Tiburcio and Jesus Esquibel. She moved to Jal from Artesia in 1966.
She was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, the Legion of Mary, Cursillista and the Third Order of St. Francis. She was also a catechism teacher and a Jal Panther fan.
Survivors include: four sons, Larry E., Albert and Frank E. Granado, all of Jal, and Richard J. Granado of Bloomfield; four daughters, Virginia Garcia of Las Cruces, Erma Meza and Sally Granado, both of Jal, and Lori Trice of Carlsbad; 22 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Grantham was born on Jan. 25, 1952, in Rudy, Ark. She married Raymond Grantham on Oct. 5, 1952, in East Grand Plains, N.M.
She was a long-time resident of the Artesia area.

Gravel, Ronnie D. - April 18 issue

Ronnie D. Gravel, a former Artesia resident, passed away April 13, in Edmond, Okla.
He was born Dec. 15, 1938, in Tonkawa, Okla., to Lola King and Amos Gravel. He attended Artesia High School and at one time, managed Bud's Minute Mart. He also owned and operated a 7-11 food mart in Roswell.
On returning to Oklahoma, he was employed at Fife Corp. for many years until his early retirement due to ill health.
Survivors include: wife Nancy of the home, Edmond, Okla.; sons Craig and wife Cheryl and Brent of Oklahoma; grandchildren Tiffany Gravel and Skylar Gravel of Oklahoma; in-laws Harvey and Jean Cochran of Oklahoma; sister Vicki Thurman and step-father John Q. McGee of Artesia.
He was preceded in death by his father, Amos, mother Lola, sister Dolores Spencer and wife Earnie.

Green, 85, passed away May 13 in Denver.

Gregory was born Sept. 21, 1936, in Aspermont and was raised in Old Glory, Texas. She graduated from Pecos High School, Pecos, Texas, and came to Amarillo in 1971. She married Dick Gregory on Oct. 19, 1996, in Amarillo. She was a member of Trinity Methodist Church and was a member of Levis and Lace Square Dance Club. She was a homemaker, loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Survivors include: husband, Dick Gregory of the home; daughters Vicki E. Huddleston of Dallas and Charlotte A. Honea of Amarillo; mother Erma Elaine Kingery Johnson of Artesia; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Nell and Jack Gibson of Albuquerque, Nadine and G. C. Black of Andrews; and 13 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, Solon D. Johnson.

Gressett, Roberta 'Bertie' - January 16 issue

Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 26, in Decatur, Miss., for Roberta 'Bertie' Gressett of Mesquite, Texas.
Gressett, 92, passed away Jan. 11 at Bentley Christian Care Center in Mesquite.
Gressett was born on May 17, 1909, in Hickory, Miss. She married James C. Gressett and was a resident of Artesia for many years.
She attended First Baptist Church of Artesia and had many friends within the community.
Survivors include: one son, Raymond Gressett and wife Kathryn of Dallas, Texas; one daughter, Mary Helen Renner and husband Bob of Avon Park, Fla.; two daughters–in–law, Zell Gressett of Collinsville, Miss., and LaVerne Gressett of Artesia; four brothers, all of Mississippi; four sisters, all of Mississippi; nine grandchildren, including Judy Willard and husband Steve of Artesia, and Becky Willis and husband Joe of Carlsbad; and many great-grandchildren.

Hall, Henry Edd - May 2 issue

Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday, May 3, at Terpening & Son Chapel for Henry Edd Hall of 494 N. 26th St.
Hall, 94, passed away May 1 at his home.
Services will be conducted by David Brunson, with interment to follow at Woodbine Cemetery.
Family members will serve as pallbearers. No visitation is scheduled.
Hall was born on July 8, 1907, in Wayland, Texas, to Frank Hall and Rillar (Boles) Hall. The family moved to Floydada, Texas, where Hall grew up and worked on the family farm.
He moved to Pinon in 1927 and worked as a ranch hand until 1938, when he purchased a farm in Cottonwood, where he resided until his death.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in Roswell on Jan. 21, 1942. He was a Gunner's Mate Second Class in World War II and was honorably discharged on Jan. 18, 1945.
He married Thelma Slater (Evans) on Feb. 12, 1945, in Washington, D.C.
He was a member of the Church of Christ and the Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include: four sons, Richard Evans and wife Dottie of San Jose, Calif., Tony Hall and wife Loretta of Artesia, David Hall of Carlsbad, and Thomas Hall of Elder, S.D.; one brother, Buck Hall, of Amarillo, Texas; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, on July 1, 1976, his parents, four sisters, and three brothers.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Assurance Home, Inc., of Roswell or the charity of choice.

Hancock, George R. - February 1 issue

George Richard Hancock, of Watts, Okla., passed away at home with his wife and daughters at his side on Jan. 30, 2002.
Hancock was born on Feb. 25, 1947 in Roswell. He served in the Vietnam War and served many years in the military as a civil engineer and held the rank of Captain in the Army Reserves at the time of his death.
As a dentist, Dr. Hancock served the community of Westville, Okla. and surrounding areas for the last 19 years. He was a loving husband, father, brother and friend and was deeply loved in return.
He and wife, Shelly Wright Hancock both graduated from Artesia High School in Artesia.
Hancock is survived by his wife of Watts, Okla.; two daughters, Apryl Frabotta and husband, Greg of Siloam Springs, Ark. and Heather Crittenden and husband, Bobby of Stilwell, Okla; three grandsons, Taylor Crittenden, Gregory Frabotta and Jesse Crittenden; one sister, Elissa Crocker of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two brothers, Bill Hancock of Ft. Sumner, N.M. and Dan Hancock of Wetumka, Okla; and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bill Hancock and mother, Vivian Hancock.
A memorial service, with the spreading of his remains, will be held at the Hancock homeplace north of Roswell in the spring.

Hardy, Charles M. - April 19 issue

Services were held on April 15 at the Delta Funeral Chapel in Cooper, Texas, for Charles M. Hardy of Cooper.
Hardy, 77, passed away April 13 at his home.
Interment was held on April 16 at Mulberry Cemetery in Sweetwater, Okla.
Hardy was born on Feb. 14, 1925, in Sweetwater to John Ellis and Nora Alice (Geyer) Hardy. He married Georgia Nell Alexander on Jan. 26, 1946, in Sweetwater.
He was a member of the Faith Baptist Church of Cooper. He also served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was a member of the American Legion.
Survivors include: his wife, of Cooper; one son, Charles W. Hardy and wife Barbara of LaPorte, Texas; two daughters, Joy Woodall and husband Tommy of Cooper, and Cindy Buckelew and husband Charles of Artesia; six grandchildren, Eddie Buckelew of Artesia, Sandy Segura of Lake Arthur, Melody Wakefield and Travis Hardy of Roswell, and Carol and Russell Woodall of Cooper; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Zella Mae Miller, and one brother, Ellis Hardy.

Heath, 81, passed away June 4 in Caldwell.

Heath was born on April 12, 1921, in Fort Worth, Texas. He married his first wife, Laura E. Derrick, in May of 1945 in Roswell.
He was a retired oil field worker and long-time resident of Austin, Texas. He resided in Artesia from 1956 until the 1980s.
He was a member of the Old Men's Polar Bear Club and enjoyed flying, fishing and swimming in Barton Springs.
He was a First Lieutenant and flight instructor for the U.S. Air Force in World War II.
Survivors include: his wife, June Heath, of the family home; one son, Milton Heath, of Austin, Texas; three step-children, Debbie Duke and Danny and Darrell Van; one sister, Scottie Ash, of San Antonio, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first and second wives, Laura Derrick Heath, on Oct. 15, 1981, and Hazel Hayes Heath.

Burns, age 80, passed away Feb. 15 in Great Plains Regional Medical Center in Elk City, Okla.
He was born Nov. 21, 1921 in Lampasas, Texas to Julia Alene and Charles Edwin Henderson.
Henderson joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and served his country with E Company, 506 Paratroopers, 101st Airborne during World War II.
After his discharge in 1945, he farmed at Artesia before moving to Perryton, Texas. He was married to Lucille Horton at Reed Springs, Mo. on April 7, 1986 and they lived in Booker, Texas before moving to Burns Flat to make their home.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, Burns Flat, Okla.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille of the home; three sons, Bart and wife, Polly of Mayflower, Ark; Bill of Dallas, Texas; and Carl and wife, Charlene of Columbiana, Al; one daughter, Roberta Baker and husband, Chip of Sierra Vista, Ariz; two step-children; 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Henderson was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Reva McLearen; one grandchild, Ashley Kelley; five brothers and three sisters.

Hesslegrave, Ruth Elder - February 14 issue  Picture

Hesslegrave passed away Feb. 11.
She was born in Jennings, Md., Oct. 15, 1927. She had resided in Artesia since 1977. She was a former restaurant owner, award-winning Avon representative and home health care provider. A devout Jehovah's Witness, she held to the Bible's hope for all mankind at John 5:28.29.
Survivors include: a brother, Carl W. Butler of Akron, Ohio; two sons, Greg Leary of the home, Kurt Hesslegrave and wife Caroyln; grandchildren Aimee Ruth and Gregory Mark Hesslegrave; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice T. Hesslegrave, her father, Asa Valentine Butler and mother Ethel Layman Butler, and one brother, Maurice Butler.

Horner was born on Aug. 12, 1924, in Wichita Falls, Texas, to Robert Cowdrey Horner and Lillian Beatrice (Smith) Horner. He came to Artesia from Texas in 1945 and married Maxine Callahan on Oct. 8, 1950, in Artesia.
He was a farmer and a member and deacon of First Baptist Church. He also served as a director of the Soil Conservation Service and a board member of the Artesia Alfalfa Growers Association.
He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

Howell was born on Oct. 15, 1912, in Lakewood to William Green Howell and Aletha Jeanette (Stedman) Howell. He graduated from Artesia High School in 1930 and was voted 'Best All-Around Student' in his graduating class. He married Mary Lorene Carder on Feb. 1, 1934, in Artesia.
He was a lifelong resident of Artesia and worked as an inspector for Continental Oil and Navajo Refining. He was also a long-time rancher and farmer, and owner and operator of Howell Welding.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and a lifelong member of Oddfellows.
Survivors include: two daughters, Helen B. Pettit and husband Gene of Artesia, and Dora J. Russell of Sunnyvale, Calif.; four grandchildren, Herbert E. Pettit and wife Jo of Lexington, Ky., Warren R. Pettit and wife Andrea of Hagerman, Craig W. Russell and wife Becky of Santa Clara, Calif., and Chad W. Russell of San Jose, Calif.; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, on Jan. 5, 2001, his parents, one sister, Beatrice Howell, and one great-grandson, John David Pettit.

Hunt, Dr. Ralph Hough - May 7 issue

Dr. Ralph Hough Hunt, a long-time resident of Artesia until his retirement to Tucson, Ariz., passed away on May 4 at his home.

Hunt was born on July 2, 1919, to John and Katherine Hunt. He was a graduate of the University of Idaho and the University of California School of Optometry.
He served in the U.S. Air Force in World War II.
He married Georgiana Griswold on July 10, 1949, in Roswell, and they came to Artesia in 1953, where Dr. Hunt practiced for many years.
An avid golfer and card player, he was a member of the Artesia Country Club and Alto Lakes Golf & Country Club, where he will be sorely missed by his many friends.
He was also a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and served as a vestryman, lay leader and senior warden.
Survivors include: his wife, of the family home; one daughter, Dr. Rebecca Hunt, of Tucson; one son, George Hunt and wife Mary, of Charlotte, N.C.; and six grandchildren, Dr. Steven Ross and wife Skye of San Diego, Calif., Carly and Mick Childers, both of Tucson, and Audrey, Rebecca and Sam Hunt, all of Charlotte.

Huntsman, 86, of 1114 S. Fourth St., No. 42, in Artesia, passed away Feb. 4 at Artesia Good Samaritan Center.
Huntsman was born Aug. 14, 1915, in Correll County, Texas, to Fred C. Harrison and Elnora (Harbour) Harrison. She married H. P. Huntsman Feb. 4, 1933, in Knox City, Texas. He preceded her in death on Dec. 6, 1979.
Huntsman came to Artesia in 1973 from Knox City, Texas and was a beautician. She owned and operated Flo's Beauty Shop in Knox City. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and Eastern Star, in Knox City.
Survivors include: two sons, Harold Huntsman of Cottonwood and Raymond Huntsman of Point Blank, Texas; one brother, Clarence Harrison of Dillon, Mont.; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Johnson, 50, of 197 Espuela Road in Lake Arthur, passed away at his home on Jan. 19.

Johnson was born Feb. 16, 1951, in Artesia to Bill Johnson and Loretta (Wells) Johnson. He was a lifelong resident of Artesia and was a farm owner and operator. He was a member of the Methodist church and was a member of Cottonwood Volunteer Fire Department and was a former member of the New Mexico Mounted Patrol.

Jones was born on May 22, 1915, in Matador, Texas, to Joseph G. Kimbell and Lelah (Anderson) Kimbell. She married Boone Jones on Dec. 18, 1933, in Artesia.
She was a member of First Baptist Church and an Artesia resident for over 60 years. The Jones' farmed southeast of Artesia, and she operated the Modernistic Beauty Shop for many years.
She enjoyed line dancing, quilting, playing piano and guitar, and taking care of her yard.
Survivors include: one daughter, Carolyn Danford and husband Glenn of Eunice; two sons, Donald Jones and wife Diane of Buckeye, Ariz., and Richard Jones and wife Glenda of Amarillo, Texas; one brother, Charlie Kimbell, of Artesia; five sisters, Grace O'Bannon of Del Norte, Colo., Ola Charlton of Pensacola, Fla., Jewel Edgerton and Oneita Titus, both of Fort Worth, Texas, and Josie Martin of Roaring Springs, Texas; four grandsons; one granddaughter; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Jones, Raymon D. - February 8 issue

Jones was born Sept. 5, 1918, in Roswell, to Randolp Brown Jones and Lou Ida (Teague) Jones. He married Nadyne Wathen on June 18, 1937, in Lubbock, Texas. She preceded him in death May 4, 1983.
Jones came to Artesia from Loco Hills in 1960. He was a retired plant operator with Phillips Petroleum. He served in the Army during World War II.
Survivors include: longtime companion Helen O'Dell of Artesia; one son, Daryll Jones of Artesia; one brother, Rannell Jones of Portales; one sister, Lula Lee Aganski of El Paso; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and a sister.

Kodesh, Leon Dennis - June 6 issue

There will be no local services for Kodesh, 68, of 401 N. 26th St., Space 20, who passed away May 29 at Artesia General Hospital.
Kodesh was born Jan. 29, 1934, in Marland, Okla., to Lewis Kodesh and Clara (Penny) Kodesh. He married Beverly Schatz on Aug. 19, 1983, in Arlington, Va. He came to Artesia in 1995 from Broken Arrow, Okla. and was a right-of-way agent and petroleum landman. He was a member of Moose Lodge and American Legion. He was an Army veteran and served in Korea.

Laman was born on June 25, 1939, in Van Zandt, Texas, to Julius Cantrell and Mary Lou (Stricklen) Cantrell. She came to Artesia in 1948 from Tyler, Texas, and married Dub J. Laman on Dec. 4, 1954, in Portales.
She worked as a waitress and was a member of Faith Baptist Church.
Survivors include: her husband, of the family home; two daughters, Linda DeHoyos and husband David of Artesia, and Gayla Nizzi of Omaha, Neb.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Lee, 80, passed away June 27 at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center in Roswell.
Interment will follow the services at Twin Oaks Memorial Park.

Lee was born on Sept. 9, 1921, in Sweetwater, Texas, to Willie Otto Hart and Bessie (Neeper) Hart. She married Curtis Ray Lee on July 1, 1940, in Roswell and came to Artesia in 1945.
She moved to Missouri in 1980. She was owner and operator of Lee's Grocery and a member of the Rock Chapel Baptist Church in Norwood, Mo.
Survivors include: her husband, of the family home; two sons, Jerry D. Lee and Tom Lee, both of Hartville, Mo.; one daughter, Diann Funston, of Las Vegas, Nev.; two brothers, Duane Hart of Lubbock, Texas, and Glenn Hart of Brownfield, Texas; two sisters, Billie Osgood of Beaverton, Ore., and Sissie Allen of Coolidge, Texas; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and one sister.

Lee was born on March 23, 1928, in James, Texas, to Robert Elmo Lee and Katie (Foulger) Lee. He married Jeanette McCallick on May 16, 1981, in El Paso.
He spent his youth and attended school in Richland Springs, Texas, and joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1945, serving his country until 1949. After his discharge from the Air Force, he moved to Artesia and became an auto mechanic.
He moved to Hope in May of 1959 and worked for Central Valley Electric until his retirement in March of 1993.
He was a member of Artesia A.F. and A.M. Lodge No. 28, serving as a past Worshipful Master, and was also a member of Hope United Methodist Church.
Survivors include: his wife, of the family home; two sons, Robert W. Lee and wife Kay of Garden City, Kans., and H.E. Gene Lee and wife Sandra of Roswell; two daughters, Kandy Lee Haldeman and husband Charles, and Wendy Lee Jones and husband Bobby, all of Artesia; two sisters, Willie Huckaby of Artesia, and Laverne Woods and husband Cecil of Hobbs; one brother, Homer Lee and wife Yvonne of Abilene, Texas; six grandchildren, Casey Haldeman and Amber and Kaylee Jones, all of Artesia, Julie Lee Hodges and husband Tim of Roswell, and Kelsey and Kayla Lee, both of Garden City, Kans.; two great-grandchildren, Chelsi Matteucci and Taylor Hodges, both of Roswell; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, and three brothers.

Leyva, 80, passed away Feb. 23 at her home.

Leyva was born on Oct. 25, 1921, in Barstow, Texas, to Valentin Molina and Josefa (Bonilla) Molina. She married Cleotilde Leyva on May 6, 1944, in Redford, Texas, and came to Artesia in 1944 from Redford.
She was a housewife and a Jehovah's Witness.
Survivors include: one son, Ismael Leyva and wife Alyce, of Artesia; one daughter, Sylvia M. Carrillo and husband Gerardo, of Artesia; two brothers, Manuel B. Molina and wife Jesusita, and Valentin B. Livingston, 95, of 7200 Osuna Rd. NE in Albuquerque, passed away May 10 at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque.

Livingston was born April 7, 1907, in Big Stone Gap, Va., to John Alexander Dowell and Selina Rosetta (Gamon) Dowell. She married M. C. Livingston on Oct. 17, 1925, in Middlesboro, Tenn. He preceded her in death on Dec. 17, 1992.
She came to Artesia in 1928 from Big Stone Gap, Va. She was a homemaker and was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include: one daughter, JoAnn L. Harris of Albuquerque; two grandchildren, Michael C. Hillard and wife Marina of Albuquerque and Gary D. Hillard of Vermont; one nephew and two nieces, John Dowell and wife Brenda of Artesia, Rosemary Framer and Janet More; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and three sisters.

Lopez, Anacleto S. - January 23 issue

Lopez, 97, of 713 N. Roselawn Ave., passed away at 1010 Missouri Ave. on Jan. 19.

Lopez was born July 13, 1904, in Carlsbad to Vivian Lopez and Helena (Sapien) Lopez. He married Luciana Delgado Feb. 24, 1946, in Carlsbad. She preceded him in death Nov. 25, 1995. Lopez came to Artesia from Carlsbad in 1946. He was a farm laborer and was a member of Assembly of God.
Survivors include: one son, Johnny J. 'Pache' Lopez of Artesia; three daughters, Frances Tesillo Munoz of Artesia, Jane Lopez Lopez of San Antonio, Texas; and Helen Lopez of Artesia; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Luis Lopez, two brothers, two sisters, and a grandson, Brian Munoz.

Maldonado, 54, passed away March 3 at Artesia General Hospital.

Maldonado was born on Sept. 17, 1947, in Artesia to Albert Delgado, Sr., and Manuela (Mendoza) Delgado. She married Oscar M. Maldonado, Sr., on March 15, 1964.
She was a lifelong resident of Artesia and a homemaker and cook at La Salsa. She was also a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.
Survivors include: her husband, of the family home; her grandmother, Natividad Mendoza, of Wilcox, Ariz.; one son, Oscar M. Maldonado, Jr., of Albuquerque; three daughters, Elida M. Martinez and husband Fernando and Maria Maldonado-Merjil and husband Pablo, all of Artesia, and Carol Alvarado and husband Ferman of Las Cruces; three brothers, Isaias Delgado of Artesia, and Albert and Steve Delgado, both of Roswell; three sisters, Jane D. Marsh, 68, died April 1 at Mission Arch Care Center following a long illness.

Born Feb. 25, 1934 in Olustee, Okla. to Mark and Letha Willis Marsh, he married Mary Ann Callis on Dec. 19, 1953 in Carlsbad.
Marsh was a long time truck driver for Lewis Means and Whitfield Tank Lines in Artesia.
He was also a member of Washington Avenue Fellowship Baptist Church. He served in the National Guard and the U. S. Air Force.
Survivors include his wife, of the family home; two sons, Daniel Mark Marsh and his wife, Jennifer, of El Paso, Texas; Allen Dean Marsh and his wife, Kathy, of Cartersville, Ga.; two daughters, Dell Ann Green and her husband, Tommy, of Dallas, Texas and Nancy Carol Rodriguez and her husband, Rudy, of Santa Fe. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one brother, Jack Marsh of Roswell, one sister, Evelyn Ford and her husband, Charlie, of La Luz, his mother-in-law, Ida Mae Callis of Roswell as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Marsh was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Billy Marsh and Ted Marsh and his father-in-law, Elbert Callis.

Martinez was born on July 4, 1904, in Fort Davis, Texas, to Julian and Augustina Garcia. She married Carlos Martinez in 1923 and moved to Las Cruces, where they lived until his death in 1974.
She then moved to Artesia and lived here until 1998, when she was transported to a nursing home in Las Cruces.
Survivors include: two daughters, Elisa Acosta of Artesia and Augustina Martinez of Roswell; two sons, Carlos Martinez of Las Cruces and Julian Martinez of Midland, Texas; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and two sons, Emilio G. Martinez and Salvador Martinez, Sr.

Funeral services were held for Albert Mata Sr., 42, of Artesia, on April 3 in San Jose Funeral Home, El Paso, Texas.
Mata passed away March 30 in Fort Stockton, Texas. Burial was in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Santa Teresa.
Mata was born April 8, 1959, to Luis and Esparanza Mata on April 8, 1959, in El Paso, Texas.

Matthews was born on Sept. 3, 1909, in Sperry, Okla., to David Berry and Lola Myrtle (Maybee) Berry. She came to Artesia in 1925 from Dewey, Okla., and married Claude H. Matthews on Aug. 15, 1928, in Artesia.
She worked as a school bus driver for 28 years in Loco Hills and at Mac's Drive-In, Kim's Drive-In, the Hermosa Drive-In Theater, and the Landsun Theater, from which she retired in 1985. She and her husband also owned and operated Claude's Pool Hall.
Matthews was a member of Clark Memorial United Methodist Church and Rebekah Lodge Sunrise #9.
Survivors include: one son, Bill Matthews and wife Roberta, of Farmington; one daughter, Lola Bohannon and husband Marvin, of Santa Fe; seven grandchildren, Reginia Garner of Artesia, Dale Bohannon and wife Lisa of Artesia, Connie Straughn and husband Glenn, Terry Bohannon and wife Anna, Robin Schumacher and husband Greg, Cheri Miller, and Debra Bohannon; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband on March 6, 1973, one daughter, Betty Garner, one son-in-law, Blackie Garner, one brother, Raymond Kennedy, and two sisters, Ruby Cooke and Ada Camp.

Maxwell, Billie L. - February 1 issue

Maxwell, age 76, entered eternal life on Jan. 30, 2002.
Services will be conducted by Rev. Wayne Griffin of the Calvary Baptist Church with interment at South Park Cemetery in Roswell.
Pallbearers are Michael D. Maxwell, Ken R. Maxwell, Darren Knight, Billy Ray Vandewart, Paul Maxwell and Cody Maxwell. Honorary pallbearers are John D. Knight and Jeff Vandewart.
Born July 25, 1925 in Snyder, Texas to Robert Paul and Alta Rhodes Lewis, she married K. Doyle Maxwell in Clovis, N.M. on April 12, 1947.
Maxwell was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Baptist Church for many years. She tended her garden and loved feeding the hummingbirds, squirrels and doves. She wrote poetry and lovingly crocheted afghans for her family.
Survivors include her husband, of the family home, two sons; Michael D. Maxwell and his wife, Rina of Albuquerque, N.M. and Kenneth R. Maxwell of Roswell; two daughters: Bonnie D. Knight and husband, John of Artesia and Linda K. Vandewart and her husband, Jeff of Yuma, Ariz. She also had 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild who lovingly called her 'Memo.'
Maxwell was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, James Paul Lewis and a sister, Emma Jean Curry.

She was a retired beautician and member of Faith Baptist Church.

Graveside services were held Saturday May 25 at Myrtle cemetery in Ennis, Texas for Bobbie Geraldine McKee. She died Wednesday May 22 in Hobbs.
McKee was born December 31, 1922 in Ennis, Texas to Bob and Dee Lavender. She married Oliver Wayne McKee on January 1, 1946 in Ennis. She was a homemaker and moved to Hobbs from Big Spring, Texas in 1962.
McKee was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband of the home, one son, Stan McKee of Artesia, N.M.; one daughter, Debbie Maddox, of Odessa, Texas; five grandchildren, Jennifer Dominguez of Rio Rancho, N.M. Meli was born on April 3, 1937, in Hagerman to James Denmon Wheeler and Lillie Blanche (Banks) Wheeler.
She was a 1955 graduate of Artesia High School and returned to Artesia in 1994 from Midland, Texas. She worked as a retail sales clerk. She was also a member of First Baptist Church and loved to fish and dance. She was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include: one son, Richard Lee Sharpe, of Artesia; one daughter, Cynthia Lynn Hall, of Troup, Texas; two grandchildren, Kimberly and Carrie Ann Montgomery, both of Dallas, Texas; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Paula J. Clark of Artesia.

Born March 31, 1917 in Brown County, Texas to Ausey Edgar and Mary Ann (Brown) Wooldridge, she married A.B. 'Andy' Melton on June 9, 1939 in Stephenville, Texas. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include three sons, Ben Melton of Tulsa, Okla., Roger Melton of Dierks, Ark. and John Melton and wife, Donna of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two daughters, Andrea Sechrist and husband, Gary of Dierks, Ark. and Mary Johnson of Artesia; three brothers, Roger Wooldridge of San Antonio, Texas, Clark Wooldridge and wife, Barbara of Amarillo, Texas and Stanley Wooldridge of Canyon, Texas; one sister, Jerry Ann Simpson and husband, Bill of Austin, Texas, 18 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
Melton was preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 21, 2000, her parents, step-mother Vera Clark Wooldridge, sister Evelyn Chaney and a grandson, Jacob Andrew Melton.

Mills, Lorene Hartley - May 16 issue

Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, at First United Methodist Church in Clovis for Lorene Hartley Mills of Albuquerque.
Mills, 84, passed away May 13 at Sandia Hospice at St. Joseph's Downtown Hospital in Albuquerque.
Services will be conducted by Dr. Steve McElroy, with interment to follow at 1:30 p.m. at the Hollene Cemetery in Hollene, N.M.
Lucille Davis, Edna Scott, Lela Stockton, Maxine Johnson, Marie Wall and Edna McGuffin will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Mills was born on Feb. 24, 1918, in Hollene to Plumis Burdine Hartley and Martha Paradine (Pott) Hartley. She married Vernon Mills on Nov. 30, 1939, in Clovis.
She was a public school teacher in Claud, Portales, Artesia and Texico.
She was also a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society for Women Educators and the First United Methodist Church of Clovis, where she sang in the choir.
She and her husband, a retired former Clovis and Artesia school superintendent, moved from Clovis to Albuquerque, where they have resided at the Woodmark Uptown Assisted Living Facility.
Survivors include: her husband, of the family home; two sons, Sidney Lane Mills and wife Sylvia of Albuquerque, and Rodney Mills and wife Susan of Lubbock, Texas; two daughters, Jackie Hodges and husband Don, and Pam Baum and husband Jeff, all of Clovis; one brother, Earl Hartley, of El Paso, Texas; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four sisters, Lena Harrison, Myrtle Osborn, Eula May Madole and Nina Harrington.

Mitchell, Eddy Guy - February 17 issue

Eddy Guy Mitchell, age 58, of Casa Grande, Ariz. died Feb. 4 in Casa Grande.
He was born April 4, 1943 in Artesia, N.M. to Cecil and Grace (Johnson) Mitchell. He graduated from Artesia High School in 1961.
An army veteran, Mitchell was a jig builder in the aerospace industry. He worked for Boeing Co. in Seattle, Wash. and for last 12 years of his career in Wichita, Kan. He retired to Casa Grande in 2001.
He loved to fish, to play darts, and to watch Seattle Seahawks football and Seattle Mariner's baseball. He was devoted to his family.
Survivors include his wife, Lori of the home; daughter Dawn Cohen of Tacoma, Wash.; Tate Mitchell, also of Tacoma; one sister VeeAnne Stensland and husband, Bill of Deming, N.M. and two grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Moberly, Bonnie Faye - March 17 issue

Services for Bonnie Faye Moberly of Clovis will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 19, at Steed-Todd Chapel in Clovis, with the Rev. Hoyt Welch officiating.
Moberly passed away March 16 at Plains Regional Medical Center. Burial will be at Melrose Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Lynn Barnes, Cody Moberly, Kevin Cravey, Arnold Knight, Dan Pierce and Charley Carter.
Moberly was born Jan. 2, 1915, in Eakly, Okla. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard Moberly; a sister, Ruby Robinson; two step-brothers, Tub Simmons and Rip Simmons; and her parents, Clark and Jessie Griffin.
She was a longtime resident of Field and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles auxiliary, Field Willing Workers Extension Club and the Baptist Church.
Survivors include: son Larry Moberly of Field, N.M.; daughter Vicki Hartsfield of Clovis; daughter Joe Marie Barnes of Artesia; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Molina, Anita Villa - February 20 issue  Picture

Services are scheduled at 9:30 a.m., Friday, Feb. 22 at Our Lady of Grace Church for Anita Villa Molina of Artesia.
Molina, age 86, passed away Feb. 19 at Artesia General Hospital.
Services will be conducted by Fr. Virgilio Flores of Our Lady of Grace Catholice Church with burial at San Marcos Cemetery in Artesia.
Pallbearers are Ysidro Salazar, Ben Villa, Oscar Molina, Richard Molina, Conrado Olguin and Bobby Olguin.
A rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Grace.
Born July 26, 1915 in Artesia to Candelario Villa and Agueda (Eredia) Villa, she married Manuel S. Molina in September of 1945 in Artesia.
She was a lifelong Artesia resident and a homemaker. She was also a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband, Manuel, of the home; one son, Tommy S. Molina and wife, Linda of Midland, Texas; two daughters, Denise Guebara and husband, Joseph of Roswell and Melissa Molina, also of Roswell; two sisters, Georgia Rivas of Albuquerque, N.M. and Chris Nunez of Artesia; three grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services for Effie L. Montgomery will be at 2 p.m. Monday, May 20, at Faith Baptist Church with Eddy LaRue officiating. Burial will follow at Woodbine Cemetery.
Montgomery, 72, of 2303 W. Grand Ave., passed away May 17 at Artesia General Hospital.
Pallbearers will be John Montgomery, Keith Jackson, Justin Montgomery, Randall Montgomery, Tyler Schulz and Raymond Clark.

Montgomery was born Jan. 12, 1930, in Hollis, Okla., to William F. Martin and Martha (Randall) Martin. She married 'Smokey' Montgomery Oct. 25, 1947, in Roswell. She came to Artesia in 1941 from Oklahoma and was a homemaker.
Survivors include: husband, Trosper 'Smokey' Montgomery of the family home; two daughters, Donna Blevins and husband Bobby of Artesia and Linda Jackson and Bob Burton of Artesia; two sons, Tommy Montgomery and wife Brenda of Artesia and Danny Montgomery and wife Peggy of Pinon; two sisters, Alta Walker of Artesia and Billie Laman and husband Cecil of Artesia; two brothers, Jimmie Martin and wife Nila of Artesia and Willie Martin and wife Betty of Las Vegas, Nev.; eight grandchildren, Tracy Schulz, Amy Smith, John Montgomery, Callie Callaway, Randal Montgomery, Justin Montgomery, Keith Jackson and Jennifer Gregory; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, a sister and a grandson, Earl Montgomery.
