Born on Aug. 15, 1926, in Walnut Hill, Fla., to John Henry Allison and Arilia Miriam (Sikes) Allison, he married Jackie McDonald on Oct. 4, 1948, in Carlsbad.
He graduated from barber school in 1949 and was employed as a barber. In 1964, he moved to Artesia from El Paso, Texas.
He was of Baptist faith and was a lifetime member of the New Mexico DAV. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include: his wife, of Artesia; three daughters, Linda Nowak and husband Eddie of Roswell, Janet Bean and husband Micky of Artesia, and Shirley Maxwell and husband Scott of Carlsbad; two sisters, Doris Engle and Margie Millican, both of Artesia; two brothers, William F. Allison of Rio Rancho, and Rev. C.W. Allison of Atmore, Ala.; seven grandchildren, Eddie Nowak, Abby Archer and John Bean, all of Artesia, Tony Nowak of Hagerman, Stacy Stapleton of Roswell, Scott Maxwell and Sheldon Maxwell, both of Carlsbad; 12 great–grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Ann Hartman, and three brothers, Henry, Bill and James Allison.

Amos, 73, passed away in Amarillo, Texas, on Saturday, July 21.
She was born in Artesia and worked in the book keeping department of First National Bank for many years. She moved to Amarillo 25 years ago and retired from a 40-year career in banking in Amarillo in 1989.
She was a loving a caring mother and enjoyed her family. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church of Artesia.
Survivors include: one son, Robert Amos of Amarillo; one daughter, Sherri Blackburn of Amarillo; three brothers, J. R. Houghtaling of Lake Roberts, N.M., Harold Houghtaling of Seven Rivers and William Houghtaling of Artesia; three sisters, Lucille Riley and Rose Malone, both of Artesia and Edith Roberts of Melrose; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Anaya, 36, passed away July 4 at his home.

Anaya was born March 27, 1965 in Artesia to Juan H. Anaya and Adelita (Ponce) Anaya. He was never married.
He was a lifelong Artesia resident and was the assistant manager at Domino's Pizza.
He was also a member of West Main Baptist Church.
Survivors include his father Juan Anaya of Artesia; brothers, David Anaya of Artesia and Raul Anaya of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister, Annabel Anaya of Artesia; grandfather, Manuel Anaya of Artesia; and five nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Aadelita Anaya; grandmother Manuela Anaya; and grandparents Pablo and Francisca Ponce.

Anaya, 84, passed away July 8 at a local nursing home.
A mass is scheduled for 9 a.m. July 12, also at St. John Catholic Church. Fr. Juan Montoya, O.F.M. will officiate. Burial will follow at Lake Arthur Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Daniel Anaya, Ernesto Anaya, Lionel Anaya, George E. Romero, Joe V. Lopez and Ernesto Martinez.
Born in Lincoln, N.M. to Pedro Analla and Carolatta Carrillo Analla, he married Lupe Gonzales Sandoval in May 1942 in Carlsbad.
Anaya was a cement contractor in the construction business and lived in Roswell for 25 years. He was a devoted husband and father and a member of St. John Catholic Church.
Survivors include his sons, Daniel Anaya, Ernesto Anaya, and Lionel Anaya; daughters Carolatta Wagner, Virginia Matta, Lena Dial, Nancy Cardova, Mary Easter smith, Bertha Lujan, Anita Armanda; sisters Romona Urban, Pilar Lopez; step-sisters Erentina Analla, Martha Gonzales and Julia Rodierz; 52 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by Florilla Morgan and family.

Arenivas was born on March 27, 1917, in Presidio, Texas, to Felipe Arenivas and Catarina (Marufo) Arenivas. He came to Artesia in 1965 from Presidio.
He was divorced and worked as a farm laborer. He was also a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.
Survivors include: two sons, Anastacio Arenivas of Tyler, Texas, and Fabian Arenivas of Pecos, Texas; four daughters, Estella DeLaRosa and Adela Cabezuela, both of Artesia, Elpidia Hernandez of Lake Arthur, and Rosa Gonzales of Roswell; two brothers, Manuel and Apoleneo Arenivas, both of Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico; one sister, Asuncion Torrez Arenivas of Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico; 23 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Arledge passed away Sept. 7 in Houston, Texas.
She was born Dec. 19, 1929, in Floydada, Texas, to Henry F. Burgett and Lila (Bird) Burgett. She married John S. Arledge Feb. 12, 1950, in Carlsbad. She came to Artesia from Las Cruces in 1972. She was a teacher and taught at Alameda Elementary School in Las Cruces until 1972 and in Artesia at Abo Elementary from 1972 to 1988. She earned her bachelor's degree from New Mexico State University. She was a member of Zeta Tam Alpha fraternity, Delta Kappa Gamma, Artesia Retired Teachers Association, National Retired Teachers Association and was a Cub Scout den mother from 1960-62 in Santa Fe and was wardrobe mistress of the Santa Fe Opera from 1958-60.
Survivors include: John Arledge of the home; one son, Tom Arledge and wife Kathy of Houston; one daughter, Anna Louise Arledge of Houston; three granddaughters, Jennifer Arledge, Pamela Arledge and Amanda Arledge, all of Houston; one brother, Henry Burgett and wife Shirley of Ft. Collins, Colo.; one sister, Martha Jane Vaughn of Houston; one foster brother, Bill Young of Carlsbad; numerous nieces and nephews, including Maureen Zielinski of Salem, Oregon.
She was preceded in death by her parents and by a sister, Bonnie George.

Ashton, 81, passed away Nov. 12 at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center in Roswell.

Born on May 16, 1920, in Quail, Texas, to Franklin Otto Ashton, Sr., and Dora Bell (Brewer) Ashton, he came to Artesia in 1934. On July 25, 1944, he married Dorothy Compary in Ogden, Utah.
Ashton worked as a maintenance superintendent for SW Potash and Amax Chemical and was a businessman, owning the Cantina Bar, AC Liquors and Dairy Queen.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, a past Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge, and a veteran of World War II. He enjoyed radio controlled airplanes.
Survivors include: his wife, of the family home; one son, Andy Ashton, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and two sisters, Lala Barnes of Clovis and Maxine Simpson of Hobbs.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one sister.

Edward Olen Atkins passed away Dec. 13 at his Artesia home. Cremation has taken place.
Atkins was born July 19, 1927, in McAlister, Oklahoma, to Jessie Joseph and Rebecca Mae (Hoover) Atkins. He married Agatha Jordan Sept. 13, 1945, in Indianapolis, Mo.
Survivors include: wife Rebecca Mae of the home; one daughter, Doris Jean Bandoian, of Yorba Linda, Calif.; and one son, Randel Ray, of Columbia Falls, Mont.

Baca, 62, of 306 E. Country Club Road No. 2, Roswell, passed away Aug. 8 at his home in Roswell.
Pallbearers will be Joe Jeffrey Baca, Mark Aquilar, Cruz Acosta, Ivan Aguilar, Christopher Baca, Jerome Aguilar and Joshua Baca.
Baca was born April 1, 1939, in Artesia, to Albino Baca Sr. and Mary Benavidez. He was a lifelong area resident. He was a former music and billingual teacher in Artesia, Roswell and Albuquerque and was a nightclub singer for several years in Las Vegas, California and Juarez, Mexico.
He attended El Gethsemane United Methodist Church and was an active volunteer at the Joy Center in Roswell and presented special music to several different church and civic groups in the area. He was an Army veteran.
Survivors include: four sons, Albino Baca of Denver, Colo., Frankie Baca of Albuquerque, Mark Baca of El Paso, Texas and Patrick Baca of Albuquerque; one daughter, Maribel Webber of Anchorage, Alaska; one brother, Joe B. Baca of Artesia; two sisters, Margaret Aguilar of Artesia and Clara B. Landeros of Eunice; seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Richard Baca, a sister, Lora Lopez and by a son, Matthew Baca.

Bland, Willard Henry - July 25 issue
Services are scheduled at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 26, at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, for the Rev. Willard Henry Bland. The Rev. Billy P. Cleaver of St. Violet Baptist Church, Tyler, Texas, will officiate. Interment will follow at South Park Cemetery.
The Rev. Bland, 65, passed away Saturday, July 21, at Eastern New Mexico Medical Cemtern in Roswell.
Bland was born on March 23, 1936, in San Augustine, Texas, to George and Maxine Bland. They preceded him in death, as did four brothers and four sisters.
He had been a resident of Artesia for five years and was a resident of southeastern New Mexico for 32 years. At the time of his death he was pastor at Bethel Baptist Church in Artesia. He served 42 years in the ministry.
Pallbearers will be Clayton Brown, Roy Clifton, Henry Douglas Jr., George Jennings, Edward Mullins and James Williams.

Bohannon was born June 11, 1921, in Monday, Texas, to W. D. Parkhill and Love Idella (Brown) Parkhill. She married Elmer Lloyd Bohannon May 5, 1937, in Roswell. He preceded her in death July 15, 1995.
She came to Artesia in 1935 and moved to Arizona three years ago. She was a mother and housewife.
Survivors include: five sons, Carrol Eugene Bohannon and Lloyd Dean Bohannon, both of Dolan Springs, Ariz., Doyle Wayne Bohannon of Camarillo, Calif., Michael Lynn Bohannon, of Escalon, Calif., and Larry Don Bohannon of Alabama; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Boyd, Viola Ruth - December 23 issue
Services for Viola Ruth Boyd, 65, of Wagoner, Okla., will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 26, at the Church Of God Of Prophecy in Wagoner with the Rev. Leon Schneider officiating.
Boyd passed away at Saint Francis Hospital, Tulsa, Okla., on Thursday.
Burial will be at Checotah City Cemetery in Checotah, Okla., under the direction of Shipman Funeral Home & Crematory, Wagoner, Okla.
She was born in Checotah, Okla., on March 30, 1936, to Marshall and Patricia (Triplett) Herron. She loved to be around people and worked as a cashier at the Williams Center in Tusla for more than 14 years. She loved the outdoors. She enjoyed going camping and fishing with he family. Her love for her family was her greatest satisfaction and a great part of that satisfaction came from having the opportunity to sew, crochet, work in her garden and most of all, play with her grandchildren.
Survivors include: husband Billy of the home; two sons, David Boyd of DeKalb, Ill., and Kenneth Boyd and wife Tammi of Bernice, Okla.; one daughter, Deborah Kay Burleson of Wagoner, Okla.; three brothers, Harold Herron and wife Leda of Anton, Texas, Jack Herron of Anton, Texas and Kem Herron and wife Becky of Artesia; three sisters, Patricia Rowell and husband Ed, Joyce West and husband Ray, Hope Mathews and husband Ronnie, all of Artesia; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; numerous other relatives and friends.

Bradley was born on April 17, 1909, in Vernon, Texas, to James Carroll Stephens and Mary Jane (Whitfield) Stephens. She married H.J. Bradley in 1946 in Lovington.
She was a longtime resident of Artesia and worked as an owner and operator of restaurants.
Survivors include: three sons, James Ham and Bobby Ham, both of Artesia, and Frank Ham of Lubbock, Texas; three daughters, Allene Brown of Hico, Texas, Betty Cockrum of Yucaipa, Calif., and JoAnn Bentley of Artesia; one brother, William Dewey Stephens, of Midland, Texas; one sister, Millie Gill, of Artesia; 16 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Briscoe was born on Nov. 2, 1914, in Brady, Texas, to John Wesley Parrish and Evie Belle (Doyal) Parrish. She came to Artesia in 1935 and married Jim Briscoe on Feb. 25, 1938, in Carlsbad.
She was a certified nurse's aide and a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include: five daughters, Dorothy Hammond, Juanel Harper, Shirley Pruitt and Betty Jo Maupin, all of Artesia, and Anita Monts of Los Angeles, Calif.; two brothers, Ray Dell and Donald Parrish, both of Colorado; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband on Dec. 1, 1991, parents, one son, James G. Briscoe in 1973, one daughter, Juanita Briscoe in 1945, one son-in-law, Kevin Harper, two sisters, and four brothers.
Briscoe, Orlando - November 11 issue
Orlando Briscoe, a resident of Loco Hills for 64 years, passed away Thursday, Nov. 8, after a fall at his home.
His wishes were to be cremated and there will be no services.
Briscoe was a veteran of World War II, serving as a merchant marine in the Pacific. He always said he had the best education a young man could have in the CCC camps, fighting forest fires in northern California in the 1930s.
He came to New Mexico after living in Illinois and Oklahoma and in 1938, he married Faye McIlhaney of Artesia. He worked 42 years in oil field production and took pride in knowing the animals and plants of the surrounding desert. As a young father in the 1950s, he taught many of the Loco Hills kids how to swim in the cattle water tanks.
More recently, he enjoyed sharing his vegetable garden and visiting with his friends.
Survivors include: his wife of 64 years, Faye Briscoe; son and daughter-in-law, John and Joyce Briscoe of Albuquerque; one brother, Keller, near Houston, Texas. He was preceded in death by 11 of his 12 sisters and brothers.

Born in Silver City to Curtis Briscoe and Sheryl (Wood) Clark, he married Tammy Munson in November 1992 in Artesia.
Briscoe was a lifelong resident of Artesia until moving to Las Cruces in May 2001 and was a cook at Sonic.
He was also a member of Agape Christian Church in Las Cruces.
Survivors include his wife, Tammy Briscoe of Farmington, N.M.; parents Curtis Briscoe of Carlsbad and Sheryl Clark and husband Charles of Artesia; three sons, Bret Michaels Briscoe, Jordan Jerome Briscoe and Evan Lance Briscoe all of Farmington; four brothers, William Briscoe of Aurora, Co., Charlton Clark of Las Cruces, Tommy Briscoe and Christopher Clark of Artesia; two sisters, Robin Briscoe and Rachel Briscoe, both of Carlsbad; grandmother Pearl Johnson of Hope.

Brown was born Dec. 12, 1912, in Jacksonville, Texas, to George Woodard Brown. He married Isabelle R. Smith on May 31, 1933 in Troup, Texas. She preceded him in death on May 20, 1997.
Brown came to Artesia in 1959 from Levelland, Texas and was owner/oprator of Brown's Cafe in Riverside. He was a member of the Masons and the Shriners.
Survivors include: one son, Jackie Brown and wife Frankie of Longview, Texas; one daughter-in-law, Vodine Brown of Artesia; seven grandchildren including Pam Thurman and Becky Ingram, both of Artesia; Debbie Golden of Little Rock, Ark., Kevin Brown of Tulahoma, Tenn., Jack Brown, of Longview, Texas, Phil Brown of Longview, Texas and David Brown of Mt. Born Feb. 22, 1928 to James H. Hammond and Writa Mae (Baker) Hammond, she married Ted Ray Buck on Oct. 13, 1945 in Carlsbad.
Buck was a lifelong resident of Artesia and was a cosmetologist.
She was also a charter member of the Women of the Moose and attended the First Baptist Church.
Survivors include her mother, Writa Mae Hammond of Artesia, two daughters, Jeanie Madron and husband, Lonnie and Rayetta Olson and husband, David, all of Lubbock, Texas; two sons, John J. Buck Sr. and wife, Donna of Albuquerque and Randy Buck and wife, Cyndi of Artesia.

Bueno was born on April 22, 1923, in Carlsbad, to Isabel Tesillo and Tomasa (Sosa) Tesillo. She married Jose Vias Bueno on Oct. 26, 1940, in Carlsbad and came to Artesia in 1941 from Tularosa.
She was a housewife and member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.
Survivors include: her husband, of the Good Samaritan Village in Hobbs; four daughters, Connie Delgado, Virginia Ruiz and Beatrice Madrid, all of Artesia, and Mabel Countz of Wichita, Kan.; three sons, Joe Bueno, Jr., of Denver, Colo., Pete Bueno, of Hobbs, and Tino Bueno, of Artesia; 23 grandchildren; and 51 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and a sister.

Bullock, 86, of 507 W. Missouri Ave., passed away Nov. 1 at his home. Burial will be at Woodbine Cemetery. Pallbearers will be George Moreau, Jerry Vest, Michael Currier, Kent Bullock, William Dale Bullock and Nicholas Bullock. Honorary pallbearers will be all of his many golf partners and other friends.

Bullock was born Dec. 14, 1914, in Artesia, to E. B. Bullock and Laura Elizabeth (Glenn) Bullock. He married Lois Spraggins on Jan. 14, 1939, in Lubbock, Texas. She preceded him in death in 1949. His second marriage was to Oleta Ford, Aug. 1, 1951, in Artesia. She preceded him in death Jan. 30, 1999.
He was a lifelong Artesia resident. He was active in the management of the family business, Bullock's Feed Store, until his retirement in 1981. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, was an Eagle Scout and Boy Scout leader and was a volunteer fireman and former president of New Mexico Feed and Seed Dealers Association. He held the Artesia High School pole vaulting record for more than 20 years. He was an avid golfer and was city champion in 1980. He was one of the founding members of Artesia Country Club and was instrumental in getting the golf course built in Artesia. He was a standout pitcher on Artesia's semi-pro baseball team in the 1940s. He applied the "sundown rule" to any disputes, which meant that once the sun went down, the disagreement was over. He often said he thought the Eleventh Commandment should be that a man should leave this earth mad at nobody and nobody mad at him.
Survivors include: one daughter, Betti Hodges and husband Robert, of Dallas, Texas; three sons, William Edward Bullock and wife Mary Jane of Alto; Van A. Bullock and wife Colette of Las Cruces and Joe S. Bullock and wife Sheila of Las Cruces; two sisters, Helen Irby of Santa Fe and Laura Shafer of Carlsbad; eight grandchildren, Michael Ridlen, Scott Ridlen, Melanie Kaufman, William Dale Bullock, Courtney Bullock, Catherine Osmundsun, Albert Hayes and Nicholas Bullock.

Bynum, 76, passed away on Oct. 2 at her home.

Born on Nov. 16, 1924, in Clovis, to Virgil S. Holley and Vera (Smith) Holley, she moved to Artesia in 1941 and married Walter H. Bynum on June 20, 1942.
She was a 1942 graduate of Artesia High School. While in Artesia, she was also a member of First Baptist Church and worked as a secretary and traffic manager at KSVP, a records librarian at Artesia General Hospital, and an office manager for Dr. Robert W. Harper.
In 1963, she and her husband moved to Lakewood, where she was employed for many years as an office manager for Neurological Surgical Consultants of Long Beach.
Survivors include: her husband, of the family home; two daughters, Judy Elaine Carpenter of Atlanta, Ga., and Rayma Gaye Powers and husband Steve of Lakewood, Calif.; two brothers, Marvin Holley and wife Rosalie of Cypress, Calif., and Raymond Holley and wife Nancy of Ellenwood, Ga.; one sister, Gladys Turnipseed, of Lovington; one grandson, James Carpenter and wife Julie of Lakewood, Calif.; one granddaughter, Kristin Saylor, of Knoxville, Tenn.; four great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and countless friends.
Bynum was preceded in death by her parents, step-father, W.H. Hatler, and one sister, Mildred McComack.

Carrera was born May 13, 1935, in Presidio, Texas, to Jose Carrera and Luciana (Machuca) Carrera. He married Lupe Brito March 12, 1955, in Carlsbad and came to Artsia in 1950 from Presidio, Texas. He worked as a farm laborer and in construction. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Church.
Survivors include: wife Lupe of the family home; one son, Bobby Carrera of Artesia; two daughters, Norma Lara of Artesia and Terry Lopez of McAllen, Texas; four brothers, Leno Carrera of Artesia; Joe Carrera of Mesa, Ariz., Isaias Carrera and Fred Carrera, both of Chandler, Ariz.; three sisters, Cruz Sabori and Mary Rincon, both of Casa Grande, Ariz., and Lily Ortiz of Chandler, Ariz.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Carson was born Jan. 8, 1924, in Seagraves, Texas. He attended school in Jal and Artesia. He was in the entertainment business in Hobbs, Lovington, San Andres Island, Columbia and Yugoslavia. He enjoyed golf, cards, politics and was the founder of Hobbs Special Olympics Bowling. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Artesia, Eagles Lodge, Moose Lodge, American Legion, New Mexico Retail Liquors Association and Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include: special friend Iris Matthews; two sons, David Carson of Fort Worth, Texas and J. J. Jones of San Antonio, Texas; four daughters, Alice Faye Landers of Germany, Kandy Lawson of Edmond, Okla., and Kimberly Norris and Kelly Penny of Grapevine, Texas; 10 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was a lifelong resident of Artesia and a graduate of Artesia High School. He also obtained a bachelor's degree from NMSU and a Doctorate in Christian Counseling from Andersonville Baptist Seminary in Camilla, Ga.
He served as a minister at First Baptist Church and was Master of Divinity at S.W. Baptist Seminary in Ft. Worth.
Survivors include: his wife, of the family home; his father, Rusty Clack and wife Donna of Artesia; four step-children, James Douglas of Bridgeport, Texas, David Douglas of Tulia, Texas, Chanya Douglas of Ft. Services for Jewell Sharp Clements, 86, of McIntosh, were held Oct. 2 at the Clements Family Cemetery, five miles west of Highway 41 in McIntosh.
Clements passed away Sept. 28 at her home.
She was born Dec. 18, 1914, in Kenton, Tenn. to the late Eula Tilghman Sharp and J. W. Sharp. She married Woodrow W. Clements on Oct. 19, 1935, at her parents' home in Dexter. She was a graduate of Highlands University with a major in Secretarial Science and a minor in music and social studies. Glee clubs and singing groups were her great pleasures. She was a teacher for 25 years, seven years at Capitan and Hondo High School, where she sponsored class plays and conducted singing groups. She also played the piano well. The last 18 years of her teaching career were spent at Monte Vista in Albuquerque. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority and was a member of Trinity Methodist Church of Albuquerque and United Methodist Church of Estancia, Chuckwagon Cowbelles, Torrance County Sheriff's Posse Auxiliary and Torrance County Seniors. She was a lifetime member of the New Mexico Education Association, National Education Association and the Retired Teachers Association.
She and four others organized the Torrance County Chuckwagon Cowbelles. An appearance on television in Roswell was a highlight for the group.
Survivors include: husband Woodrow; sons Joe Clements and wife, Stephanie of Higley, Ariz., Bill Clements and wife Cookie, John Clements and wife Beth and daughter, Judy Rivers, all of McIntosh; sister Gayle Swearingen and husband Van of Artesia; 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Cockrum, 49, passed away Oct. 16 in Lubbock, Texas.
Cockrum was born Dec. 25, 1951, in Artesia to John L. Cockrum and Nora Agnes Cockrum. He married Norma Sue Patterson July 15, 1994, in Plains, Texas. He had lived in Lovington since 1989 and worked for Baker Petrolite for the past 15 years. He enjoyed music, poetry, music, hunting, fishing and his family.

Cole, 76, passed away June 30 at the home of her son, Christopher Hall, in Ogden, Utah.
Mark Young officiated at the memorial service, which was directed by Fry-Bartlett Funeral Home.
Born in Hope, N.M. on July 10, 1924, the firstborn of Joe and Mary Young, she married R. L. Hall in 1943. They lived in Cleburne, Texas and Flagstaff, Ariz. until Hall was killed in an airplane crash.
She moved to Abilene, Texas in 1951, with three small children, to complete her college degree. She received a master's degree from Abilene Christian College and taught in Abilene Public Schools for several years.
She married Ray Cole in 1961. They retired in Tuscola, Texas. After his death in 1992, Cole moved to Abilene in 1996 and to Missoula, in 2000.

She was also an avid bowler in the Carlsbad bowling leagues.

Born Feb. 11, 1933 in Hagerman to Antonio Delgado and Blasa (Duran) Delgado, he married Calletana Losoya on Oct. 3 1956 in Artesia.
Delgado was a lifelong area resident and was a farm laborer.
He was a a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.
Survivors include a son, Joe Delgado of Artesia; daughters, Elisa Rodriguez of Artesia, Rebecca Calvillo of Artesia, Monica Zaragosa of Artesia and Debbie Delgado of Artesia; brothers, Tony Delgado of Artesia and Pete Delgado of Delano, Calif.; sisters, Tiadora Ruiz of Artesia, Longina Ponce of Artesia, Thomasa Salas of Artesia and Ciotilde Fuentes of Artesia; 14 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.

She was born April 9, 1984, in Carlsbad to Newman Dominguez and Corina (Carrera) Valenzuela. She came to Artesia in 1998 from Hobbs, where she had lived the previous 10 years. She was a senior at Artesia High School and played volleyball and basketball and competed in track.

Eskue, 84, passed away July 3 at Artesia General Hospital.

Born Feb. 15, 1917 in Boswell, Okla., to John Henry Eskue and Olan (Mann) Eskue, he married Mary Lou Harrison in February 1940 in Roswell. He married his second wife, Karol Chamblee, in the early 1970's.
Eskue was a long time Hope area resident and was a construction laborer.
He was also a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a daughter, Glenna Burden and her husband William of Las Vegas, Nev.; sons, Vance Eskue of Victorville, Calif. and Dean Eskue of Vancouver Island, Canada; step-sons, Gary Chamblee of Hagerman and Dean Chamblee of Fountain, Colo.; brothers, Johnnie Eskue of Texas, Doyle Eskue of Phoenix, Ariz. and Don Eskue of Wilcox, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Mary Lou Eskue and Karol Chamblee Eskue.

Farmer passed away Sept. 3 at his home. No visitation is scheduled.
He was born Sept. 17, 1918, in Yale, Okla., to Max Farmer and Clara Mae (Ramsey) Farmer. He married Maxine Bunting on April 21, 1946, in Artesia. He came to Artesia from Wink, Texas, in 1939. He was a farmer and owner/operator.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, Shriners and was a survivor of the Bataan Death March as a veteran of the Army in World War II.
Survivors include: wife Maxine of the family home; three daughters, Linda Gayle Farmer of Chandler, Ariz., T. C. Farmer of Fountain Hills, Ariz. and Gindy Jo Farmer Lunsford of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Stacy Ann Lunsford of San Francisco, Calif., and Andrea Kristen Lunsford of Scottsdale, Ariz.; several nieces.

A memorial service for Gilbert Fierro will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 6, at St. Marks-on-the-Mesa Episcopal Church, 431 Richmond Place NE, Albuquerque.
Fierro, 55, a former Artesia resident and 1965 graduate of Artesia High School, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 2, in Albuquerque.
He was a devoted Christian and a 30-year resident of Albuquerque. He devoted much of his life to helping others, both in his church and in the community. He made four missionary trips to help the people of Honduras, participated regularly in feeding the homeless and was an active member of the Cursillo community.
For the past two years, he was a dedicated and enthusiastic site supervisor for Habitat for Humanity in Valencia County. He will be most remembered for his boundless generosity, his willingness to serve God and his love of cooking.
Survivors include: wife Carol of Albuquerque; two children, Miguel and Katrina Fierro and their mother, Dianne, all of Albuquerque; three stepsons, Ron Claycomb, Greg Claycomb and Kevin Claycomb; three grandsons, Christopher Gonzales and Victor and Peter Claycomb, all of Albuquerque; parents Manuel and Marta Fierro of Artesia; three brothers, Manuel Fierro of Carlsbad; Robert Fierro of Ropesville, Texas; and David Fierro of Artesia; two sisters, Mary Vargas of Artesia and Veronica Baker of Brunswick, Ga; and a host of loving friends.

Fisher, 87, passed away at the Artesia General Hospital on Nov. 6.

Born Feb. 24, 1914 in Weed, N.M. to Joe Fisher and Fannie (Chandler) Fisher, he married Lunye Mae Dean on June 16, 1937 in Carizzozo, N. M. She preceded him in death on April 16, 1981.
Fisher came to Hope in 1945 from Weed, and was an owner/operator of a dairy.
Survivors include four step-daughters: Carol Posey of Sacramento, N.M., Bobbie Jo Van Winkle of Artesia, Lenora Harlin of Albuquerque and Lucy Wimberly of Belen; one step-son, James Munson of Clarksville, Texas; 12 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Fisher was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Fogle, Patsy Lee Ruiz - December 12 issue

Fogle, 54, passed away Dec. 7 at her home.
Services will be conducted by Father Alcuin Hunter. No visitation is scheduled, as cremation has taken place.
Fogle was born on June 30, 1947, in Oklahoma to Burt Searan and Imogene Rogers. She came to Artesia as a child and graduated from AHS. She moved to Carlsbad in 1974, where she worked for 16 years as a nursing aid at Lakeview Christian Home of the Southwest, Inc.
She was also a member of St. Edward Catholic Church and enjoyed riding horses, camping, the outdoors and dancing.
Survivors include: four sons, Lucas Ruiz of the U.S. Army stationed in Germany, and Ivan, Eli and Steve Ruiz, all of Carlsbad; one adopted son, Kel Sawyers, of Carlsbad; two daughters, Christie and Monica Ruiz, both of Carlsbad; her father, of Tennessee; one brother, Mike Searan, of Artesia; one sister, Nancy Searan, of Oklahoma; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Dairian Nichole 'Peanut' Ruiz and D.J. Smith.

Foster, 81, passed away Nov. 10 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Albuquerque.
He was born Nov. 16, 1919, in Hagerman. He was a lifetime resident of the Pecos Valley area. He married Gladys Angell on Feb. 9, 1946.
He was a survivor of the World War II Bataan Prisoners of War. He was one of the original organizers of Little League and Babe Ruth baseball in Artesia in 1950. He helped organize and was the first president of the Optimist Club. He was the manager of Artesia's New Mexico State Employment office for 19 years and farmed southeast of Artesia. In 1969, he bought Mobil Oil Distributing and operated and managed it for 21 years. In 1986, Carl purchased Foster Ranch. He was a member of Church of Christ.
Survivors include: wife Gladys of the home; brother Kenneth Foster and wife Shirley, three sons, Eugene and wife Jean of Carlsbad, Curtis and wife Sharon of Grapevine, Texas and John and wife Della of Artesia; 12 grandchildren, Doug Santo, Brian Santo, Rebecca Santo, Regina Santo, Jeremy Foster, Misty Foster, Micah Foster, Brooke Foster, Bron Foster, Clay Foster, Cherry Henry and Chip Foster; great-grandchildren Anthony Santo, Timothy Santo, Chelsea Santo, Kaz Foster, Colton Foster, Kasen Foster, Britton Henry, Brady Henry and Summer Guerin.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mattie Boyce Foster, his father, James Foster, one brother, James Jr. Foster and one sister, Lois Smith.

Foster, 63, of 2270 Rosedale Dr., Las Cruces, passed away July 11 at Lewisville Memorial Medical Center, Lewisville, Texas.

Foster was born Nov. 18, 1937, in Artesia, to Mervon Leslie Worley and Roma Lois (Wathen) Worley. She married William Foster April 19, 1956, in Artesia. She was a longtime Artesia resident and moved to Las Cruces in November of 1991. She was a retired bookkeeper and attended school in Cottonwood and Artesia.
She attended Cornerstone Fellowship.
Survivors include: husband William Foster of the family home; mother Roma Worley of Artesia; one daughter, Elissa Ruddick and husband Allen of Las Cruces; Karl Foster and wife Jane of Flower Mound, Texas; five grandchildren, Randy Allen Ruddick and Jamie Elizabeth Ruddick of Las Cruces, Mason James Foster, Mollie Elizabeth Foster and Karson William Foster, of Flower Mound, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her father, Mervon, on Feb. 16, 2001.

Franco was born on April 16, 1916, in Redford, Texas, to Pablo Franco and Rosa (Compian) Franco. He married Eva Cortez on April 16, 1936, in Mapimi, Durango, Mexico, and came to Artesia in 1949 from Ft. Stockton, Texas.
He worked as a farm laborer and was a member and Deacon of the Spanish Assembly of God and a member of the Head Start Grandparents program.
Survivors include: his wife, of the family home; six sons, Willie Franco, Alvaro Franco, Jr., Javier C. Franco, Pete C. Franco and Raul C. Franco, all of Artesia, and Frank C. Franco of San Antonio, Texas; four daughters, Rosa Guerra of Toppenish, Wash., Rita Lugo of Tucson, Ariz., Elva Luna of Carlsbad, and Vangie Kon of Hobbs; one brother, Ishmael Franco of McAllen, Texas; 35 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.
Fulton, Gary Mark - July 31 issue

Fulton, 35, passed away Sunday in Albuquerque. Interment will be at Woodbine Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Kerry Ryan, Scott Fulton, Gary Roberts, Don Gatlin, Dean Lee, and Danny Graciano. Honorary pallbearer will be Wayne Bedingfield.
Fulton was born Oct. 10, 1965 to Charles and Bridget (Smith) Fulton in White Sands, N.M. He grew up in the Las Cruces, Silver City area of New Mexico and served with the U.S. Marine Corps.
He married Michele Cantrell and settled in Artesia. he was a member of the Church of God, served as music evangelist and loved to play golf, hunt and fish. He was very involved with his daughters' activities, loved to watch them do gymnastics and spend time as a family.
Survivors include: wife Michele of Artesia; daughters Amber and Courtney, of Artesia; stepmother Mary Fulton of Las Cruces; one brother, Scott Fulton of Florida; mother and dad-in-love, Artie and Debbie Cantrell of Artesia.
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Fulton.

Garner, 81, passed away on Oct. 2 in Las Cruces.

Born on Dec. 25, 1919, in Muleshoe, Texas, she moved to Artesia in 1940 and married Robert C. Garner on Jan. 28, 1941.
Garner received her bachelors degree in 1968 and her masters in 1974 from Western New Mexico University.
She taught fourth grade at Hermosa Elementary School for 16 years and also taught at Roselawn Elementary and Loco Hills Elementary.
She was also a member of the Hermosa Church of Christ, Delta Kappa Gamma, NEA-NM and the Association of Educational Retirees.
Survivors include one brother, Charles Gleghorn and wife Dorothy of Artesia; one sister, Dorotha Dale 'Dot' Bunch of Carlsbad; two daughters, Lana Daniell and husband Dean of Tahoka, Texas, and Barbie Nicholas and husband Nick of Albuquerque; two sons, Critt Garner and wife Mary of Las Cruces, and Tim Garner and wife Kate of Silver City; 17 grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; seven nieces and nephews; and numerous friends and colleagues.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dale and Theron Gleghorn, one sister, Eloise Gracie, one grandson, Michael, and one nephew, Toby Gleghorn.

Gates, Wallace S. "Wally" - July 17 issue
A memorial service for Wallace S. "Wally" Gates, 88, of Loveland, Colo., is scheduled for 10 a.m., Thursday, July 19, at First Presbyterian Church in Artesia. The Rev. Bob Williams will officiate.
Gates passed away July 15 at a Fort Collins, Colo., nursing home. Cremation is planned. Private interment will be held at Woodbine Cemetery.
Gates was born May 1, 1913, in Artesia to Virett Lester Gates and Nelle Withington Gates. He worked the family farm as well as managed others. He attended Westminster Men's College in Fulton, Mo. and graduated from Occidental College in Los Angeles, Calif. He married Vergine Russell on Jan. 16, 1938, in Rawlins, Wyo., and they lived in Artesia until 1947, then moved to Vernon, Texas until 1953. They lived for awhile in San Antonio, Texas and then moved back to Artesia. He worked as a bookkeeper, a wholesaler of alfalfa and hay and he was self employed in farmer's supply. He sold his business, Cottonwood Fertilizer and Feed, in 1976 and retired.
In 1996, he moved to Villa del Rey Retirement Village in Roswell. Due to failing health, he moved to The Wexford Retirement Center in Loveland, Colo. in January of this year.
He was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church in Artesia and was an elder for many years. He also attended Westminster Presbyterian Church in Roswell. He enjoyed the dinner and bridge club in Artesia as well as bird hunting and woodworking.
Survivors include: wife Vergine R. Gates; two sons, Russ Gates and wife Lenor of Proctor, Vt. and Bill Gates and wife Sue of Ft. Collins, Colo.; two sisters, Virginia Irish of La Jolla, Calif. and Helen Maxwell of Ashville, N.C.; four grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

Gentry, 91, passed away Oct. 22 at the Pecos Valley Care Center in Fort Sumner.
Born on May 10, 1910, in Echo, Ark., to William Madison Norris and Anna Margie (Burrowes) Norris, she married Samuel Gentry on Nov. 6, 1936, in Roswell. They moved to Fort Sumner in 1958 to make their home.
Gentry was a member of the Church of Christ and liked to crochet and read in her spare time. She also enjoyed gardening and canning.
Survivors include: one son, Sam Gentry and wife Pat of Lake Arthur; one sister, Mildred Morris of Roswell; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 2, 1984, and four brothers, Carl, Curtis, Raymond and Buel Norris.

Born May 5, 1918 in Lynn County, Texas, to Alex Gillespie and Susie (O'Hare) Gillespie, he married Gladys Lisenbee Dec. 6, 1936, in O'Donnel, Texas. He came to Artesia in November of 1946 from Texas, then moved to Alpine, Texas in 1964 and returned to Artesia in 1969. He was owner and operator of grocery stores in Artesia and Alpine.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Artesia Bulldogs Sams Travel Club.

Ginanni was born on July 12, 1913, in Carlsbad, to Willoughby Rice Hegler and Mary Alice (Leck) Hegler. She married Cecil Ginanni on Sept. 6, 1945 in Carlsbad.
She was a life-long resident of Carlsbad and a graduate of Carlsbad High School. She worked as a teacher at Queen School and also taught at Harroun Farms.
She was a member of St. Edwards Catholic Church and was active in 4-H, Farm Bureau, Altar Society, Woman's Club, Gardening Club, Landsun Auxiliary and Eddy County Extension Club. She also enjoyed gardening and reading.
Survivors include: her husband, of Carlsbad; one son, Joe Ginanni, of Las Vegas, Nev.; one daughter, Jean Young and husband Jimmy, of Carlsbad; one niece, Peggy Alice Taylor Burger and husband Don of Las Vegas, Nev.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Gomez was born on Feb. 6, 1907, in San Juan de los Lagos, Mexico (U.S.), to Marcos Padilla and Juana (Magana) Padilla. She married Gonzalo G. Gomez on Dec. 28, 1927, in Carlsbad and came to Artesia from Carlsbad in 1929.
She was a housewife and mother and was also a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, St. John's Catholic Church of Roswell, Fraternity of the Sacred Heart, Fraternity of St. Francis, Legion of Mary, and Cursillistas.
Survivors include: one son, Frank Gomez and wife Pina of El Paso, Texas; eight daughters, Juanita Briseno and husband Robert of Artesia, Socorro Gomez, Belle Paz and husband Anastacio, Leticia Gomez and Esmera Gomez, all of Roswell, Virginia Garcia and husband Gilbert of Las Cruces, Yolanda Gomez of Albuquerque, and Rita 'Chata' Olivares of Ventura, Calif.; two sisters, Clotilde Velasquez of Tulare, Calif., and Sela Trujillo of Salt Lake City, Utah; 36 grandchildren; 64 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Cursillistas and the Labor Construction Union.

Holzapfel was born April 28, 1929, in Kansas City, Mo., to Ernest L. Holzapfel Sr. and Helen (Watson) Holzapfel. He married Joanne Bemenderfer Jan 13, 1968, in Muncie, Ind. She preceded him in death on March 18, 1995. He came to Artesia in 1994 from Colorado. He was manager of Distribution Warehouse and J. A. Black, Inc. He was a veteran of the Army.

He was a lifelong resident of Artesia and graduated from Artesia High School in 1971. He married Wilma Jo Antee on Sept. 4, 1975 in Carlsbad.
He was a heavy equipment operator and transporter. He was also a member of the Eighth and Grand Church of Christ, a member of the National Rifle Association and was an avid outdoorsman and gunsmith.
Survivors include wife, Wilma, of the family home, mother, Mary Ada Hooten of Artesia, one son, James and wife, Tiffany, one daughter, Misty Dawn Hooten and one grandson, Brandon Michael Walden, all of Lubbock, Texas.

He worked as a farmer and was a Naval veteran of World War II.

Howard was born Feb. 16, 1912, in Granite, Okla., to William Franklin Howard and Julia Josephine (Roberts) Howard. He married Lois D. Dickerson Sept. 3, 1933, in Chico, Texas. She preceded him in death on April 25, 1995.
Howard came to the Maljamar area in 1943, then to Artesia in June of 1945. He was head maintenance foreman for Conoco Oil Co. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Artesia Genealogical Society, Pecos Valley Amateur Radio Club, president of AARP for many years and was active in the Senior Citizens Center.
Survivors include: one son, Dwayne Howard and wife Mryna of Dallas, Texas; one daughter, Janet Bishop and husband Bob of Artesia; daughter-in-law Marian C. Howard, 87, passed away Aug. 29 at her home.
She was born Aug. 9, 1914, in Eastland, Texas, to Tommy Arthur Tate and Annie May (Tyler) Tate. She married Truman Wesley Howard on Dec. 16, 1948, in Carrizozo. He preceded her in death Jan. 24, 1999.
She came to Artesia in 1949 from the Carlsbad area and was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church, BPOE, D.O.E.S., and was an avid gardener. She enjoyed sewing and quilting and loved her rose garden.
Survivors include: one daughter, Rita Butts of Artesia; two sons, Jimmy Alexander of Williams, Ariz., and Dwaine Howard of Carlsbad; one brother Tommy Tate, of Yuma, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and two daughters, Linda Elington and Barbara Trussell.
Humphrey, Vern - September 19 issue
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20, at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Midland, Texas, for Vern Humphrey of Midland.
Humphrey, 72, passed away on Sept. 16 at his Midland residence.
Interment at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland will follow services.
Family visitation began at 5 p.m. today. A Vigil Prayer Service is scheduled for 7 p.m. today.
Born on Nov. 11, 1928, in Oklahoma City, Okla., to Dudley H. Humphrey and Irene (Boise) Humphrey, he married Martha Schmidt on April 6, 1953, in Grinnell, Kan.
He moved to Texas in 1953 and was a resident of Pasadena, Deer Park, Beaumont, Arlington and Fort Worth before settling in Midland. He worked for several corporations selling industrial gases and welding supplies.
He was also a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, where he was an usher for many years, was active in the Boy Scout Program, and was a member of various dance organizations in Midland.
Humphrey served in the U.S. Navy from Nov. 1945 until Oct. 1947.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Humphrey of Midland; one son, John Humphrey and wife Jean of Artesia; one grandson, Joshua Humphrey of Artesia; and one granddaughter, Katie Humphrey of Artesia.

Jones, 85, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 13, in Ruidoso.
She was born May 19, 1916, at Nogal and lived in Lincoln County until 1959, then returned to Lincoln County in 1999 from El Paso. She was married to Samuel Virgil Jones on Sept. 24, 1934. He preceded her in death.

Kafton was born in Artesia on July 4, 1941 to Lester and Bernice George.

She was preceded in death by her father, Lester George, Sr. and her husband, Richard Kafton.

Knorr passed away at her home in Artesia on Thursday, Sept. 6.
She was born on June 23, 1952, and grew up in Anthony, N.M., and Las Cruces.
Debbie graduated from NewMexico State University, where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. She was in graduate school in 1975 when she was recruited by IBM, for whom she worked until her marriage in 1980. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the J Chapter of PEO and was very active with the public schools. She served as President of Yucca Elementary School's PTO and was a member of the Superintendent's Parent Advisory Council. Her commitment to all children and their education was evident by the many hours she spent volunteering on their behalf. Debbie was a beloved daughter, sister, mother and friend to all those around her. She is deeply missed.
Survivors include: her three children, Jack Sharp Knorr, 14, Benjamin Davis Knorr, 11, and Margaret Lynnlee Knorr, 10, all of Artesia; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack B. Sharp of Las Cruces; sister, Laura Lee Moore and husband Gary Moore of Albuquerque; her nephew, Dr. David Moore and his wife, Dr. Jennifer Moore one niece, Melissa Lee Taylormoore and her husband, Jonathan Taylormoore, all of Nashville, Tenn.; the father of her children, John Allen Knorr of Artesia; and her many loving friends who have been so supportive of her during her lengthy illness.

Lackey, 59, a resident of Cedar Crest, passed away Saturday, July 21, at her home. Zella Jo (Jelly) Van Winkle Lackey lived in Artesia from the time she was two-years-old in 1943 until her sophomore year in high school.
She was born Sept. 7, 1941, to Clarence and Lorene (Bogart) Van Winkle in Carlsbad. She married Royce D. Lackey Aug. 29, 1959, in Ruidoso. She was a member of Vista Grande Church in Cedar Crest and had been very active in the Women Ministry Group for 10 years. She will be remembered as a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and special friend to many.

Landeros, 78, died on Oct. 5 at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.
Services were conducted by Fr. Valentine Jankowski of St. Clare Catholic Church, with interment following at Brunson Memorial Cemetery in Eunice.
Landeros was born on May 4, 1928, in El Paso, Texas, to Alvino and Maria Baca. She moved from Artesia to Eunice in 1950 and was a member of St. Clare Catholic Church.
Survivors include: one son, Richard Landeros, of Eunice; three daughters, Angelita Moreno and Graciela Soriano, both of Eunice, and Elizabeth Gonzalez of Hobbs; one sister, Margaret Aguilar, of Artesia; one brother, Joe Baca, of Artesia; one aunt, Nativida Rodriguez, of Albuquerque; 20 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Levario, 78, passed away Sept. 29 in Artesia.

Pallbearers were Juan Sifuentes, Alfredo Martinez, Leonardo Juarez, Ysidro Levario, Jesus Jose Levario and Lorenzo Juarez.
A rosary was recited at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church on Monday.
Levario was born on May 29, 1923, in Ojinaga, Mexico, to Jesus Mata and Josefina (Alamos) Mata. She married Jesus G. Levario in November of 1939 in Ojinaga.
Levario came to Artesia in 1953 from Alpine, Texas. She was a housewife and member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Lake Arthur.
She is survived by her husband, Jesus G. Levario, of the family home; six sons, Manuel Levario, Mike Levario and Ysidro Levario, all of Artesia, Jesus Levario, Jr. and Leopoldo Levario, both of Lake Arthur, and Jesus Jose Levario of Hagerman; four daughters, Maria Reveles of Artesia, Elena Lara of Roswell, Josefina Juarez of Monahans, Texas, and Elia Levario of Kansas City, Mo.; one sister, Tomasa Mata, of Juarez, Mexico; 42 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Leyba was born Nov. 4, 1921, in Ruidosa, Texas, to Encarnacion Leyba and Magdalena (Garcia) Leyba. He married Paulita Jimenez on Feb. 10, 1942 in Carlsbad. She preceded him in death on Nov. 20, 1999.
He was a longtime Artesia resident and an oilfield worker and floor hand for Mack Chase. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Cursillistas and Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include: three sons, Alfredo J. Leyba and Edna of Hobbs; Sammy J. Leyba Sr. and Yolanda of Odessa, Texas and Carlos J. Leyba Jr. and Esther of Artesia; one daughter, Angie L. Carrera and Alberto of Artesia; two brothers, Timoteo Leyba Sr. of Artesia and Eusebio Leyba Sr., of Artesia; 17 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Victor Leyba and by two sisters and a grandson.

She was born Dec. 24, 1921, in Comanche County, Okla., to James and Bertha (Lumbert) Staggs. She married Floyd Doughty on June 20, 1940, in Roundup, Okla. They came to Loco Hills in the early 1940s. He preceded her in death Oct. 3, 1973.

Madrid was a resident of Artesia until moving to Las Cruces in 1994 and was a department manager for Wal-Mart.
He was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Las Cruces and a drummer for the band Todo.
Survivors include his wife, Veronica Madrid, of the family home; mother, Beatrice Madrid of Artesia; father-in-law, Danny D. Valdez, Sr. and wife Christine of Phoenix, Ariz.; one brother, Anthony Guerrero of Artesia; one sister, Tracie Marie Madrid of Artesia; and grandparents Joe and Geneva Bueno and Maria Rivas, all of Artesia.

Born on May 3, 1948 in Artesia to Manuel Chavez and Monica (Briseno) Chavez, she married Cipriano L. Martinez on March 10, 1967 in Carlsbad.
She was a lifelong resident of Artesia and was a child care provider and was also employed at the Artesia Public School Cafeteria.
She was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.
Survivors include husband, Cipriano Martinez of the family home; mother, Monica Chavez of Artesia; two sons, Michael Martinez of Artesia and Carlos C. Martinez and wife, Delilah of Roswell; one daughter, Monica M. Pustovrh of Roswell; two brothers, Rudy Chavez, Sr. and Freddy Perches, both of Albuquerque; one sister, Manuela M. Chavez of Ft. McCain, Koie - November 4 issue
Graveside services for Koie McCain were held at Portales Cemetery Saturday morning for Koie McCain, 70, who passed away Oct. 31 at his home in Portales.
McCain was born May 19, 1931, in Paducah, Texas, to Inez and Jacob L. McCain. He lived on a farm in Muleshoe, Texas, for a number of years before moving to Portales in 1951. On May 20, 1953 he married Sammie Chalk in Portales. He farmed in Portales until 1958, when he started driving for Welch Trucking Co. Later he was employed as a propane driver for Bob Strong Oil and later worked as a driver for Arrow Gas Co. He retired in 1987 and formed K. K. B. Enterprises and bought and sold used cars until 1994. He had been retired the past seven years. He was a member of Masonic Lodge. He loved camping and fishing.
Survivors include: father wife Sammie McCain of the home; three daughters, Linda Connelly of Portales, Glenda Gideon of Artesia and Delores Gentry of Portales; mother Inez Brown of Portales; one brother, Roy McCain of Portales; three sisters, Elsie Wheeler of Weatherford, Texas; Corine Gossett of Portales and Colleen Widener of Ruidoso; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his father, his step-father, Richard Brown, two brothers, Jake and Weslie McCain, and two sisters, Laurella and Carmaleta McCain.
McCallum, Elizabeth Elser Denton - October 26 issue
Memorial services are pending in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, for Elizabeth Elser Denton McCallum, 88, who passed away Oct. 16 in Butte, Mont.
Mrs. McCallum was born June 16, 1913, to Wilbur A. and Ruby Elser in Wooster, Ohio. While a child, Elizabeth's family moved to Mesilla Park, N.M., when her father joined the New Mexico Agricultural Extension Service. Subsequently, Mrs. McCallum attended New Mexico State University (then New Mexico A&M) and in 1934, was the first woman to graduate in engineering.
After completing her civil engineering degree, she married Artesia native Eugene Denton, who also had received his mechanical engineering degree in 1934. The couple moved to their first home in Wyoming, where 'Gene' through previous work experience, had established himself in the developing oil industry. They lived in oil camps hear Red Lodge, Mont. and Turner Valley, Alberta, Canada, and later, Great Falls, Mont.
In 1938 the family moved to Calgary, where as a wildcatter, they soon formed partnerships and through their own companies were instrumental in the development of the energy industry across western Canada. Gene Denton died suddenly of acute leukemia in 1949 at age 41.
Elizabeth remained in Calgary, rearing five children. They then returned to Great Falls in 1952, when Elizabeth married Lyle W. McCallum. He was killed in an automobile accident in 1959.
Elizabeth returned to Las Cruces in 1985 and resided in the University Terrace Good Samaritan Village until 1998 and attended University Presbyterian Church. In 1996 she was inducted into the NMSU Academy of Civil, Agricultural and Geological Engineering.
Survivors include: daughters. Marjorie Van Scyoc of Albuquerque, Carole France of Denver and Phyllis Denton Hassler of Dillon, Mont.; two sons, Gordon Denton of Fort Worth and David Denton of Brooklyn, N.Y.; sisters Kaye Waggoner of Boulder, Colo., Helen Teegardner of Houston, Texas and Edith Pitti of Sacramento, Calif.; two brothers, the Rev. Franklin Elser of Santa Fe and William A. Elser of Calgary; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Juanita Denton Branum of Artesia; and a brother-in-law, Jack Denton, of Phoenix, Ariz.

Services for Jacqueline De-an "Jacque" Moore, 57, of Davis Street in Carlsbad, are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, July 5, at Carlsbad Cemetery, with Mal Shakra of Sunset Church of Christ officiating.
Moore passed away Thursday at Carlsbad Medical Center. She will lie in state today from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. at Denton-Funchess Funeral Home, Carlsbad.
She was born Oct. 5, 1943, to Carl Allie Terrell and Ruth Irene Turner Terrell in Casper, Wyo. At age two they moved to Artesia, where she grew up and attended school. She married Danny Sanchez and raised her family until her husband passed away. She then worked as a waitress in nursing homes and in private care. In 1969 she moved to Carlsbad where she worked at Landsun Homes, Inc. and in private care. In 1980 she meet Curtis Moore. They married Nov. 24, 1992. In 1992 she became medically disabled. Her hobbies included art, woodworking and painting.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Robert Terrell; two sisters, Annie Anglin and Terry Jean Terrell; her first husband, Danny Sanchez; and one son, Johnny Carl Terrell.

Moore of California; Curtis Lynn Moore of Seymour, Texas; Calvin Bernard Moore of Dekalb, Texas; Greg Moore of Munday, Texas; three stepdaughters, Nina Wagner of Atlanta, Texas, Jackie Pollard of Texarkana, Texas and Helen Charles of Carlsbad; three brothers, Carl K. Terrell of Batesville, Ark., Harry Joe Terrell of Atlanta, Ga., Mike Terrell of Batesville, Ark.; and two sisters, Suzy Dowell of Batesville, Ark., Sandy Givens of Indiahoma, Okla.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Moore, Vera E. - October 4 issue
Graveside services for Vera E. Moore will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 5, at Twin Oaks Memorial Park. Carl Shelton will officiate.
Moore, 86, of 201 N. 42nd St. in Artesia, passed away Oct. 3 at Lakeview Christian Home in Carlsbad.
The family will be receiving friends at 2004 W. Bullock Ave.
Moore was born June 19, 1915, in Milburn, Okla., to Charles Nelson Shelton and Sarah Elizabeth (James) Shelton. She married Edgar Carlton Moore on April 6, 1938 in Childress, Texas. He preceded her in death Feb. 3, 1967.
She came to Artesia in the fall of 1941 from Bethany, Okla. and was a housewife. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, James N. Moore of Artesia; four daughters, Wanda Reames of Carlsbad, Patricia Hale of Crestview, Fla., Peggy Carter of Casa Grande, Ariz. and Zelda Moore of Roswell; one sister, Oleta O'Neal of Bethany, Okla. one half-sister of Bethany; two half-brothers, Billy Shelton of Lake Arthur and Carl Shelton of Ft. Worth, Texas; 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two grandsons.
Morey, Artie Mae - July 6 issue
Services are scheduled at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 10 for Artie Mae Morey of 1007 S. Second St.
Morey, 83, passed away July 6 at home.
Services will be conducted by Darrell Brown of Hermosa Drive Church of Christ with burial at Melrose Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.
Pallbearers are Doug Stovall, Darrell Stovall, Dean Stovall, Danny Stovall, Danny Brown and Harry Price.
Guy McArthur, Mike Goss, Bill Ross, Robert Smith, Mattie Newsum, Don Moore and Don Canada will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Born Aug. 16, 1917 in Chavez County, New Mexico, to Joseph Eugene Tucker and Lena (Brentley) Tucker, she married Otto Dodd in 1930, who passed away in 1966. She was married to Wayne Morey Nov. 4, 1967 in Artesia, who passed away in 1997.
Morey came to Artesia in 1982 from Melrose, and was a housewife.
She was also a member of Hermosa Drive Church of Christ and taught ceramics.
Survivors include one son, Carl Dodd of Artesia; two brothers, Richard Tucker of Plainview, Texas and Leroy Tucker of Rogers, Ark.; two sisters, Mildred Mills and Lorraine Stovall, both of Clovis; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and by two brothers and three sisters.

Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4, at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church for Chris G. Mullen of Albuquerque.
Mullen, 30, passed away on Sept. 29 at his residence.
Services will be conducted by Fr. Clemente Comesky of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, with interment at Woodbine Cemetery.
Visitation began today at Terpening & Son Mortuary. A rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. this evening at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.
Pallbearers are Adam Garcia, Manuel Huerta, Jr., Jeff Hernandez, Israel Catano, Harvey Rodriguez, Mikey Chavarria and Marty Martinez.
Honorary pallbearers are Michael Munoz, Fabian Munoz, Fred Balencia, Steven Balencia, Tommy Hooper, Lalo DeLaRosa, Kimberly Morgan and Sheila DeLaRosa.
Born on Feb. 3, 1971, in Artesia to George Glenn Mullen and Ida DeLaRosa, Mullen moved to Albuquerque in 1989 and was a Financial Clerk for Lovelace Hospital.
He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Artesia.
