Grammy’s House is planning its second annual domestic violence walk in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) in October.
DVAM evolved from the Day of Unity first held in October 1981 and conceived by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The intent was to connect advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children.
The Day of Unity soon became an entire month devoted to a range of activities conducted at the local, state and national levels. The activities were as varied and diverse as the program sponsors themselves but had three common themes:
• Mourning those who have died due to domestic violence.
• Celebrating those who have survived.
• Connecting those who work to end violence.
To recognize DVAM, Grammy’s House, Artesia’s Domestic Violence Shelter Inc., has scheduled its Second Annual DV Walk for Thursday, Oct. 6. The walk will proceed from the Grammy’s House Administration Office at 811 W. Texas Ave. to Central Park.
Participants are asked to assemble at Grammy’s House by 5 p.m. and to wear purple, the color symbolizing domestic violence. The walk will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the event will last approximately two hours.
“Domestic violence thrives when we are silent,” Grammy’s House stated in a release, “but if we take a stand and work together, we can end domestic violence. Throughout the month of October, help Grammy’s House to raise awareness about domestic violence, and join in our efforts to end violence.
“The color purple represents the courage, survival, honor and dedication to ending domestic violence. It has a long history of being used as a symbol by victims and survivors seeking justice. Everyone is welcome. Grammy’s House invites anyone who wishes to share their personal experience concerning domestic violence.”
