The City of Artesia added a ban on texting while driving to its municipal uniform traffic ordinances this week after the State of New Mexico effectively prohibited the use of mobile devices for texting while operating a motor vehicle earlier this summer.
Officials stated it was necessary to add the ordinance to Artesia’s city code so such cases could be prosecuted in the city’s Municipal Court. According to the city ordinance, drivers in Artesia may not read, view or transmit texts on a mobile electronic device while operating a motor vehicle.
