At left, 3-year-old Yaresli Salamanca holds onto her mother, Berenice Salamanca, as she watches performances by Park Junior High School choir students Saturday at the Artesia Public Library, the endpoint of the Boots*to*Fill event organized to benefit Yaresli, who was diagnosed last spring with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Artesians contributed used boots and shoes, inscribed with inspirational messages for Yaresli on the soles and containing donations, and attendees of Saturday’s event followed the Artesia High School band down Main Street as the footwear was lined up along the sidewalks from The Derrick Floor to the library. Berenice Salamanca was overcome with emotion as she thanked the community for its support of her young daughter as she undergoes regular chemotherapy treatments in Albuquerque. All funds raised through Boots*to*Fill will go directly toward Yaresli’s medical bills. The campaign evolved from a children’s book authored by event organizer Toni Haas, who expressed her appreciation for the outpouring of donations and well-wishes for the Salamancas.
