An Artesia man convicted of the 2009 death of a local resident has been sentenced to nearly three decades in prison.
Jesus Gutierrez, 25, was sentenced in Carlsbad Fifth Judicial District Court by Judge J. Richard Brown to 27 years in prison, followed by two years on parole. In February, Gutierrez was found guilty of second-degree murder, tampering with evidence and aggravated burglary with a deadly weapon in connection with the stabbing of his estranged wife’s boyfriend, Jason Valencia.
He was acquitted of a fourth charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
