Two unrelated shootings near Artesia this weekend left one man dead and another in critical condition.
Sheriff Earnest J. Mendoza, of the Eddy County Sheriff’s Department, reported that deputies were dispatched to an area near Fanning Road southeast of Artesia at approximately 1 p.m. on Sunday regarding a shooting incident.
According to a press release, police found 20-year-old Kalyb Gabaldon suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. The report states that the man was with his father, 45-year-old Rojelio Gabaldon, near the river off of Dayton Road, south of Artesia, where the two were fishing and shooting firearms. The firearm reportedly involuntarily went off while Rojelio was reloading the weapon, resulting in his son’s injury.
Kalyb was transported to Artesia General Hospital for treatment and then to Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, Tex. for critical care. He is reported to be in stable condition and is expected to recover. … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
