The City of Artesia will meet with the New Mexico State Highway Commission at 1 p.m. Oct. 17, where representatives of Artesia and Eddy County will request the state’s attention to U.S. Highway 82 and State Highway 229 in and around the city.
“Eighty-two is a highway that has a huge number of accidents weekly,” said Artesia Mayor Phil Burch. “It’s a narrow, two-lane road that’s regularly traveled by industrial equipment as well as passenger cars. It’s a recipe for accidents.”
According to Burch, the city has been asking New Mexico for four years to improve highway 82.
“(On U.S. 82), you can only go as fast as the slowest vehicle ahead of you,” Burch said. “People get impatient, and accidents happen.” … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
