ARTESIA — Competing against rodeo athletes from 41 states, five Canadian provinces and Australia at the world’s largest junior high rodeo, Kaitlyn Harwell of Pinon took the national championship last month in Gallup in girls’ breakaway roping.
In her first year to qualify for the National Junior High Finals Rodeo – a division of the National High School Rodeo Association for students in grades 6-8 – Harwell took top honors in the breakaway with a 10.865-second average on three head.
