In opposition to listing the lesser prairie chicken under the Endangered Species Act, a rally will be held Tuesday, Feb. 12, in Roswell prior to a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) public hearing.

The rally, hosted by both the Artesia and Roswell Chambers of Commerce, will be held at the AVFlight Hangar (formerly the Great Southwest Aviation Hangar), located at 100 Southwest Way at the Roswell Industrial Air Center, beginning at 4:30 p.m.

“This is not just about saving jobs in New Mexico and in other nearby states,” Artesia Chamber of Commerce Director Hayley Klein said. “We want to help to conserve the lesser prairie chicken as we did with the dunes sagebrush lizard. There’s definitely a happy medium where we can save the prairie chicken without the cost of anyone’s job or harming our economy. That’s what this rally is all about.”
Much like the recent struggle against listing the dunes sagebrush lizard, Klein said if the lesser prairie chicken was listed, a “ripple effect” would result, negatively impacting the economy and overall way of life in New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado.
