Prosecution expected to rest in Flores trial

The prosecution is expected to rest soon in the criminal case against Robert Flores, formerly of Artesia, who is accused of negligent child abuse resulting in the death of his 4-month-old daughter in 2007.
Flores was charged with negligent abuse after placing the infant in a laundry basket and allegedly leaving his home to purchase alcohol. His wife returned home from work and found the child in the basket, pale and stiff. A jury in Albuquerque, where the case was moved on a change of venue due to pretrial publicity in Las Cruces, heard testimony Monday from Las Cruces Police Department officer Kacee Thatcher, who questioned Flores following his arrest without an attorney present.
Jurors also saw video of an emotionally distraught Flores speaking to his wife in a low voice after being left alone for an hour in an interview room, and video of his interaction with his parents. In the video, Flores told them he had “messed up” and “given (the police) what they wanted.”
The jury is slated to hear from another officer, Edgar Rosa, and the Office of the Medical Investigator before the prosecution rests and the defense begins calling witnesses.
