The ceremony began with an introduction from the mistress of ceremonies, Bernita Smith Page, a principal and teacher in Carlsbad. Before the invocation by Revered Michael Shelton Sr., pastor of the Friendship Baptist Church in Roswell, a posting of the colors was carried out by the Naval Sea Cadets of Artesia’s Pecos Valley Ironclad Battalion.
Then, after an official welcome from Artesia City Councilor Raul Rodriguez, Mayor Phillip Burch took to the podium.
