Paws & Claws having positive impact on county

Going before the Eddy County Commission Tuesday morning, Paws & Claws Humane Society President Cindy Perini provided an upbeat update concerning her organization.
In the past fiscal year, Perini said Paws & Claws has spayed or neutered 155 dogs and cats for the residents of Eddy County. That number includes 113 dogs – 81 female and 32 male – and 42 cats – 29 female and 13 male. … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
“To give you an idea of the great impact this has on a community,” Perini said, “studies show that one female dog and her offspring over her lifetime can produce 67,000 puppies. One cat over its lifetime can produce over 400,000 kittens. So, by fixing dogs and cats, you’re having a huge impact down the road.”
And those aren’t all the benefits that go along with spaying or neutering a pet. According to Perini, when dogs and cats are neutered, they are both less aggressive by nature and less likely to run from their homes and potentially cause harm to wildlife or small children.
And while Perini said the animal shelters in Carlsbad and Artesia are “absolutely overflowing,” Paws & Claws has had to euthanize less animals than it has in previous fiscal years.
