Dusty Bean is making the transition this year from Artesia (Zia) Intermediate School to Grand Heights Early Childhood Center.
Bean, the new PE coach at Grand Heights, was born and raised in Artesia. After graduating from Artesia High School in 1994, he attended New Mexico Military Institute for one year. Bean spent six years as a youth pastor.
“I loved it,” said Bean, “but I decided I wanted to be around kids more. I went through an alternative license program at Santa Fe Community College, and the rest is history.”
This year marks Bean’s fourth year teaching in the Artesia Public Schools. Along with teaching, Bean has been an assistant coach and coach of the Artesia High School golf team for the past nine seasons as well as a football coach at Zia for the past four seasons.
“I want to be a positive influence on children,” said Bean about his new job at Grand Heights. “These children are future Bulldogs in training. They are so young, and you don’t expect them to get it right off the bat, but they do. In 10 years, these kids are going to be starting high school and are going to be playing sports, and I want to be that positive influence in their lives.”
