What began as a weekend on the couch for local pastor David Grousnick and his wife, Vickie, watching a marathon of shows on national barbecue competitions has now blossomed into what the couple hopes will become the next big thing in community events for Artesia.
National barbecue competitions have grown significantly in popularity over the past several years, due in large part to the televising of such events by channels such as the Travel Channel. After watching one such marathon last April, the Grousnicks decided to pitch the idea of bringing a barbecue competition to Artesia to the Artesia Trailblazers, of which Grousnick is president. … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
“They bought into it hook, line and sinker,” Grousnick said.
The first step in the process was for both Grousnick and his wife to attend training for organizers of competitions, as required by the Kansas City Barbeque Society.

Speaking as an accomplished chef and veteran of the KCBS circuit, David & Vickie Grousnick are doing it right! They really have gone all out as event coordinators in every aspect imaginable and you’ll be hard pressed to meet nicer or more generous people.
Barbecue, in my opinion, is as American as it gets: In the culinary world, it may be the only style of cooking truly indigenous to this country; and as an American pastime, it represents backyard cookouts and get-togethers from coast to coast.
Having said that, whether or not you love different cuts of pork, beef and chicken slow smoked to perfection, you should attend for the festivities, entertainment and camaraderie. KCBS competitions are always a lot of fun and I anticipate Smokin’ On The Pecos to be exceptional….but you don’t have to take my word for it….After all, the Governor of New Mexico designated it as a State BBQ Competition.
Congratulations to David & Vickie! Mark your calendars, folks. June 29-30, 2012.
