A sandblaster removes the patina on The Rustler statue this morning at the intersection of Second and Main streets. The bronze statues around town will be receiving a facelift and a little tender loving care throughout the week. The Rustler will be receiving a new patina, while the other statues will be waxed and buffed. Patina is a tarnish that forms on the surface of bronze and similar metals, produced by oxidation or other chemical processes. Patina is a coating of various chemical compounds such as oxides or carbonates formed on the surface during weathering. The Statue of Liberty gets its green color from the natural patina formed on its copper surface. (Tyler Green – Daily Press)
