ARTESIA — Together as citizens and their police department we have to act together towards the common goal to curb the crime in our neighborhoods. Therefore, the Artesia Police Department would like its citizens to be aware of the importance of reporting crimes when they occur.

Several benefits are the result of reporting crimes including the apprehension of criminals, the recovery of stolen property and indirectly, additional manpower for the police department.

Citizens should feel safe and secure in their own home, and they have some responsibility to make sure this occurs. Reporting such crimes as burglaries as they occur – with citizens providing accurate and informed descriptions of the violators and their associated vehicles to the police – allows officers to react quickly and efficiently to identify and apprehend an offender.

The offenders of burglaries and other like crimes are often acting opportunistically on the spur of the moment. They may also be acting in order to support something else, like a substance addiction or the substance addiction of a loved one or acquaintance. They may also be committing the act for the thrill of it.
