The county will be looking to partner with oil and gas companies as a solution to maintain roads with heavy traffic patterns in the southeast portion of Eddy County.

The Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) chose to move forward with creating a Public Roads Committee following a presentation by Dean Wall, an independent consultant hired by the county to inventory roads and assess their maintenance needs, during the county commission meeting Tuesday.

Wall explained the recent surge in oil and gas extraction in the area has created severe maintenance problems on several of the caliche roads serving the area, and the maintenance requirements exceed the current capabilities of the roads department.

“We’re under the gun,” said Wall. “We are probably in the worst possible conditions as far as road maintenance goes; it’s a phenomenal challenge.” … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
