Every year in October, Art in the Park draws more than 5,000 visitors to Central Park. According to Police Chief Don Raley, the bigger the event gets, the more dangerous it becomes.

“It’s not the size of the event itself,” he said. “It draws in more and more people every year. Because of that, it goes out far beyond the park. It’s not just Art in the Park. It ends up being Art in the Neighborhood.”

The Artesia Arts Council’s standard request to hold the event in Central Park was denied by the city council during its July 12 meeting.

Raley said issues such as parking, traffic concerns and a high volume of pedestrians made it unsafe for him to recommend the event be held at the park again. … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
