Eddy County Commissioners will hold a special meeting with members of the Bureau of Land Management to discuss conservation efforts of the Dunes Sagebrush lizard next week.

The meeting is being held as a general information session to allow the county to participate in the conservation process and for the board of commissioners to learn what can be expected from the BLM.

Commissioner Jack Volpato said the board of commissioners is simply petitioning to be a contributing party in the discussion on listing the lizard as an endangered species as well as any conservation methods of the species.

“We (the board of county commissioners) are trying to be a participating agency, to be a part of the process, to review the listing, so adverse decisions are not made and so we can be aware of what is happening,” Volpato said.

The meeting is open to the public and will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 12 in Rm. 211 at the Eddy County Commission Chambers located at 101 W. Greene St. in Carlsbad.
