Jesse and Mary Wright made an unplanned stop at a hot spot on their way home to Roswell after an appointment in Artesia on Wednesday afternoon.
The Wrights spotted a brush fire alongside Highway 285 near mile-marker 85.
Jesse pulled off the highway, pulled a shovel out of his truck and began to battle the blaze, which he said had already grown to approximately 20-square feet.
“I was trying to beat it out with my shovel,” Jesse said. “But the heat was pretty intense. I had to back off.”
Minutes after Jesse Wright became a volunteer firefighter, Jesse Martinez, who was heading the opposite way on the highway, also stopped to lend a hand. … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
