ARTESIA — The Eddy County Commission will hold an annexation hearing at 7 p.m. tonight at the Eddy County Fairgrounds Community Center concerning the City of Artesia’s ongoing attempt to annex several areas bordering the city.

During the hearing, commissioners will listen to the opinions of affected residents. The general attitudes of the people will be taken into consideration when the commission makes a final ruling on whether or not to allow the City of Artesia to gain control over several roads which run through the areas sought.

Commissioners voted 4-1 against transferring the roads on Nov. 3, citing concerns over giving property owners adequate voice in the matter. The commission was also concerned that getting into compliance with city code would prove difficult for low-income property owners in the areas.

Power to complete the annexation transferred from the New Mexico Boundary Commission to the Eddy County Commission during a hearing which was held in October.
