The New Mexico Activities Association’s Board of Directors met in regular session today via Zoom Webinar.

Executive Director Sally Marquez gave her Director’s Report, which included an announcement that only information coming directly from the governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of education, or herself should be considered accurate when it comes to the 2020-21 school year, an introduction of Scott Elder as the newest Board Member beginning July 1, and a statement that the regular Board Meeting schedule for 2020-21 has been set.

Marquez presented the NMAA Financial Report, which included information on the budget for the 2020-21 fiscal year and the financial impacts the current pandemic has had on the organization.

Commissioner of Officials Dana Pappas presented the New Mexico Officials Association Report, which included information on the numerous webinars that have been conducted over the last month to keep officials engaged/active.

Assistant Director Scott Owen presented two discussion items, which included information regarding the NMAA’s heat illness policy and co-ops in the sport of wrestling.

Marquez presented three discussion items which included information regarding centralized golf championships, NMAA state championship trophies, and the recent work done by the NMAA Bylaws Committee.

The Board voted to table five action items and move them to discussion only. Pappas presented two items, which included information regarding officials’ assignments for invitational tournaments and the use of certified officials for track and field meets. Associate Director Dusty Young presented one discussion item regarding the 2A football calendar. Marquez presented two discussion items, which included information regarding the use of two- person officiating crews for 1A basketball and a request from NMPSIA to require additional coach education courses.

The Board of Directors took action on the following items only based on their nature (time-sensitive/emergency).

-Voted in favor of a proposal to adopt special physical examination bylaws for the 2020-21 school year due to the current public health threat which has caused limited access to health care providers.

-Voted in favor of a proposal that allows for summer activities to commence on June 15 under the special return-to-play guidelines adopted by the NMAA in response to the coronavirus pandemic and public health orders implemented by the State of New Mexico.
