In the path of righteousness is life, and in its pathway there is no death (Proverbs 12:28)
A celebration of life is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21, at Terpening & Son Chapel for Dorothy Jane Shishido of Artesia.
Shishido, 82, passed away Saturday, Dec. 15, 2018, in Lubbock, Texas.
She was born May 27, 1936, in Hilo, Hawaii, the daughter of Valentine Perry and Mary (Fernandez) Silva.
Dorothy was raised in Hawaii with her seven siblings. She was a witness and survivor of the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941 in Hawaii. She graduated from Hilo High and later received her degree in child development from the University of Hawaii.
Dorothy was a preschool teacher for less-fortunate children. During the 1970s, she became a den leader for the Cub Scouts, where she met the love of her life, U.S. Marine and U.S. Army Sadatoshi Shishido.
After she retired in the 1980s as a preschool teacher, Dorothy and Sadatoshi moved to the mainland, where they married in 1984. He preceded her in death in 2003, and she came to Artesia that year from California to be closer to family.
Dorothy spent a short time living in Austin, Texas. Later, she returned to Artesia, where she lived the remainder of her life surrounded by those who loved and adored her. She spent her life fulfilling her passion of taking care of children. She loved fishing, cooking Hawaiian and Japanese cuisines, and teaching her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren how to follow traditions.
Survivors include her children, Willie Rex Medley and wife Amanda of Kyle, Texas, Micheal Mullen of Artesia, Michelle Duschane and husband Angelo of San Diego, Calif., and Naomi Mick and husband Steven of Rainsboro, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
As requested by the family, a memorial account has been established in honor of Dorothy Shishido under the account number 2177499361 at Wells Fargo Bank.
Arrangements are under the direction of Terpening & Son Mortuary. Condolences may be expressed online at www.artesiafunerals.com.
