The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) and Safer New Mexico Now (Safer) will host a Child Safety Seat Fitting Station this week in honor of a local boy killed last year in a traffic accident.

The fitting will be held from 10 a.m. – noon Saturday, Dec. 15, at Fire Station No. 2, 309 N. Seventh St., and will be in memory of 7-year-old Cy Palmer, who tragically lost his life Nov. 15, 2017. Palmer was not using a booster seat, which ensures seatbelts fit correctly and the child is properly restrained in the event of a wreck.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports using child safety seats decreases the risk of death by an estimated 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for older children. When a car, truck, or van suddenly stops in a wreck, everyone and everything inside keeps moving. Child safety seats and seatbelts help manage that energy so bodies don’t need to.

New Mexico state law stipulates all occupants must be properly restrained in all seating positions. Each child in a vehicle should be restrained in the correct child safety seat. Any restraint device must meet federal standards and must be appropriate for the age and size of the child.

During the free event, parents and caregivers will receive personalized, hands-on instruction from nationally-certified child passenger safety technicians. Technicians will educate parents on the proper selection, installation, and use of car seats and booster seats. Technicians can also determine if a seat is recalled, expired, or otherwise unsafe.

Donations in memory of Palmer will also be accepted during the event, or to donate online, visit shop.safernm.org/donation-form. All funds will be utilized to support child passenger safety and child safety seat awareness.

Fitting Stations are a public service funded by the NMDOT and are available to everyone.

Appointments take approximately 30 minutes per seat. Parents will need to bring their child safety seat and, if possible, the child. There is no charge for the inspection service; however, a seat replacement fee may apply. Appointments are encouraged. For more information or to make an appointment, call 800-231-6145.
