Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at University Baptist Church in Portales for Sammie Jo (Chalk) McCain of Portales.
McCain, 83, passed away Sunday, Oct. 14, 2018, in Portales.
Rev. Steve Smith will officiate the services, with interment to follow at the Portales Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jason McGregor, Steven Connelly, Michael Connelly, Devon Gideon, Richard Connelly and Avery McGregor.
Sammie was born April 8, 1935, in Weed to Raymond Ellis and Myrtle Dell (Fisher) Chalk. Her family moved to Hope when she was in the fourth grade and to Floyd when she was in the ninth grade. She graduated from Floyd High School as salutatorian in 1953.
On May 20, 1953, she married Koie McCain in Portales. For several years, the couple lived in the Portales and Roswell areas before moving to Portales to make their home in 1966.
In 1969, Sammie began working in the cafeteria at Lindsey Elementary School. She later moved to the high school, retiring in 1994 after 25 years as director of food services.
Sammie enjoyed cooking, sewing and gardening. She liked to do crafts of all sorts and especially liked woodworking. Through the years, she collected a number of birdhouses and bells. She was a member of University Baptist Church.
Survivors include daughters Linda Connelly and husband Steven, and Delores Gentry and husband Larry, both of Portales, and Glenda Gideon and fiancé John Runyan of Artesia; grandchildren Lori McGregor and husband Jason of Amarillo, Texas, Michael Connelly and wife Sara of Fort Worth, Texas, Devon Gideon and wife Liz of Aurora, Calif., Courtney Gideon and boyfriend Travis Mize of Hereford, Texas, Shawn Watson of Lowell, Ore., and Julie Hill and husband Greg of Lubbock, Texas; great-grandchildren Avery, Audrey and Joshua McGregor, and Dillon Watson, with a fifth great-grandchild, Cannon Connelly, expected in November; brother George Chalk and wife Frances of Aurora, Colo.; sister Elta Jeffries and husband John of Fort Worth; and sisters-in-law Corine Gossett and husband Harold of Portales, and Colleen Widener and husband Jerry of Ruidoso.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant sister, Nada Chalk; and her husband, Koie, who passed away Oct. 31, 2001, after more than 48 years of marriage.
