A fatal accident early Friday morning claimed the life of a Dexter woman and her child.

At approximately 7 a.m. Friday, the New Mexico State Police were dispatched to the scene of an accident at U.S. 285 near mile marker 96 south of Roswell.

Initial investigation revealed a 2000 Chevrolet S-10 pickup, driven by Crystal C. Sanchez, 22, of Dexter, was travelling east on Ken Street approaching the U.S. 285 intersection. The pickup attempted to cross the southbound lanes in order to turn north on 285 and was T-boned by a 2014 International Commercial Motor Vehicle.

Sanchez and her 1-year-old son sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Heavy fog and limited visibility in the area were listed as contributing factors in the wreck.

Alcohol does not appear to have been a factor, and seatbelts were properly utilized.
The driver of the CMV was transported from the scene with unknown injuries.
