The New Mexico Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission (NMJPEC) has appointed Matthew Kirk of Hagerman, an account representative in the oil and gas service industry, as its newest member.

Kirk is an account representative in Carlsbad for DistributionNow, a company that provides equipment and services to the oil and gas industry with offices and affiliates around the globe. He was previously a branch manager for AirGas, a provider of welding and oil field supplies, in Artesia. Kirk also has extensive experience in the hardware and retail industries, serving as a wholesale distributor, owning his own hardware store, and working with Ace Hardware.

He grew up in West Texas east of Lubbock and attended Texas Tech University. He is a member of the Lions Club and enjoys outdoor sports, recreational activities, and spending time with his family.

Kirk previously served on a judicial nominating commission that was responsible for submitting names to the governor’s office to fill a judicial vacancy in southeastern New Mexico.

NMJPEC was established by the Supreme Court of New Mexico in 1997 as a volunteer, nonpartisan commission to improve the performance of New Mexico’s judges and provide useful, credible information to voters on judges standing for retention in general elections.

Under state law, judges standing for retention must receive 57 percent voter approval to remain on the bench.

The New Mexico Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission is comprised of 15 individuals – seven lawyers and eight non-lawyers – who are appointed by the Supreme Court to staggered terms. Members are selected from nominations made by the Governor, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Speaker of the House, Senate President Pro Tempore, House Minority Leader, Senate Minority Leader and President of the State Bar.
