10-year-old Ashton Craft of Cottonwood 4-H displays the fruits of her labor this morning during the Eddy County Fair Junior Livestock Action as she tempts buyers with slices of her prize-winning red velvet cake and sweet tea. Craft’s cake was awarded the Grand Champion Cake at the Eddy County Fair beating out eight other competitors with her greatgrandmothers recipe. She and her grandmother, Jodie Phillips, practiced several of her greatgrandmothers recipes before settling on the red velvet one, which was the consensus of the friends and family members they used for taste testers prior to the competition. She then prepared seven sheet cakes last night to serve to the buyers today with the help of her friends. The proceeds of her new-found cakemaking skill netted her $3,000 from Holly Frontier and Holly Energy Partners. Craft is the daughter of Krystal and Johnny Craft and will be a fi fth grader at Hermosa Elementary School this fall. Danny Scott – Daily Press
