Doyle Pounds

Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, July 20, at Hermosa Church of Christ for Doyle Pounds of Artesia.

Pounds, 85, passed from this life Tuesday, July 17, 2018.

Family members will officiate the services, with interment to follow at Woodbine Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his grandsons. Honorary pallbearers are Randy Allison, Don Calvert, Nubbin Crouch, Joe Durand, Jeff Fanning, Steve Forister, John Foster, David Houston, Jack Huddleston, Ron Lewis, Kenneth Monk, Lonnie Owens, Brook Owens, J.T. Ross and Don Tidwell.

Visitation will be held until 8 p.m. today at Terpening & Son Mortuary. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m.

Doyle was born Feb. 24, 1933, in Lamesa, Texas. He grew up with a love for scouting and achieved the highest honor of Eagle Scout. Later, as a farmer, he was awarded the New Mexico Outstanding Young Farmer of the Year in 1965.

On Jan. 2, 1955, he married Dixie Williams in Artesia.

Doyle was a longtime resident of the Pecos Valley, moving to the Artesia area in 1956. He served his country in the U.S. Army for two years, farmed for nearly 40 years, served on the Eddy County Fair Board for many years, worked for SWIG Cotton for 12 years, and, late in life, enjoyed serving as a greeter for Wal-Mart, where he made new friends and reconnected with old friends.

He was a faithful member of the Church of Christ, serving as an elder for the Eighth and Grand congregation for 21 years.

Survivors include his wife; children Dwayne Pounds and wife Melanie, Donnie Pounds and wife Dee, and Diana Joy and husband Jack, all of Artesia, Deena Morgan and husband Johnny of Prosper, Texas, and Daana Pittam and husband Curt of Artesia; sister Verna Owens of Artesia; grandchildren Brandon Joy, David Pounds, Kami Jenkins, Jared Pounds, Kolbyn Joy, Dustin Pounds, Stuart Joy, Daniel Pounds, D’Naye Conklin, Destiny Contreras, Braeden Morgan, Zane Pittam, Brice Morgan, Zaac Pittam, Za’Leigh Pittam and Brynlee Morgan; 16 great-grandchildren; and honorary grandchildren Kristal Speck and Chanelle Forister.

He was preceded in death by his parents, L.C. “Buck” Pounds and Mary “Kitten” Pounds.
