James Benson Baker, 83, passed away Wednesday, June 27, 2018, at his home in Artesia.

He was laid to rest at Twin Oaks Memorial Park.

James was born Sept. 8, 1934, the son of Curtis “CA” Arwood and Ruby Pearl (Schmitz) Baker.

On July 5, 1958, he married Sara Elizabeth “Liz” Cole in Las Cruces.

James was a lifelong resident of Artesia and was the owner of Baker-Stephens Tire Company.

Survivors include sons James Curtis Baker and wife Gina of Dallas, Texas, and Larry Murphy of Artesia; daughter Shirley Murphy of Artesia; sister Stella Heathington of Artesia; nephews Johnny Angel of Aztec and Mike Heathington of Midland, Texas; niece Cheryl Heathington Welch of Artesia; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Liz Baker, on Sept. 13, 2005; his parents; and sister Billie Jean Vogt.
