Walter Bynum

Memorial services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, June 28, at West Main Baptist Church for Walter H. Bynum of Lakewood, Calif.

Bynum, 95, passed away Monday, June 18, 2018, at his home.

Pastor Jason Kraft will officiate the services. Cremation has taken place.

Walter was born March 21, 1923, in Otis, the son of Richard L. and Ela Leslie (Davis) Bynum.

On June 20, 1943, he married Virgie Lea Holley in Artesia.

Walter graduated from Artesia High School and came back to be a teacher and coach after finishing college at Hardin-Simmons University. He coached the Bulldogs to their first state championship in 1957 and taught at AHS for 11 years.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was a member of the 449th Bombardment Group.

The Bynums moved to California in September 1963. There, Walter taught and coached at Rolling Hills High School for 33 years. Following his retirement, he volunteered on his daughter’s Tumble Bus, a mobile gymnastics program.

Walter loved sports, his grandchildren, and pets and all animals. He enjoyed reading the Sunday comics, writing letters, and sharing stories of his travels abroad.

Survivors include daughters Judy Carpenter of Knoxville, Tenn., and Rayma Powers of Lakewood, Calif.; brother Bill Bynum of Roswell; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virgie Bynum, on Oct. 2, 2001; his parents; and brothers Jimmy Bynum and Leroy Bynum.
