An Artesia man was arrested Thursday evening after assaulting staff at the local hospital, as well as police officers.

Artesia Police Department officers were dispatched to Artesia General Hospital in reference to a disorderly male subject in the emergency room.

There, they made contact with an ER nurse who had been struck by the suspect as hospital staff attempted to adjust his restraints. The nurse suffered a bruise to the area of her right cheek and eye.

Once hospital staff had removed an IV from the suspect, identified as Chris Duran, 36, of Artesia, officers attempted to place him in handcuffs. Duran resisted, however, reportedly issuing verbal threats to officers and hospital staff.

After being cuffed, Duran allegedly attempted to headbutt one of the officers and was taken to the ground until he could be controlled.

Police were eventually able to load the suspect into a patrol unit, at which time Duran spit in the face of an officer.

Duran was subsequently arrested on charges of battery upon a healthcare provider, battery upon a peace officer, assault upon a peace officer, and resisting, evading or obstructing a peace officer. He has been scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. preliminary examination June 20 in Artesia Magistrate Court.
