An 18-year-old Artesia man was arrested this morning following a nearly three-hour standoff with police.

Angel Chavez was taken into custody at a residence in the 700 block of Lolita Avenue around 9:30 a.m. today after barricading himself inside for two-and-a-half hours with what police describe as a “bladed instrument.” Chavez was wanted on a battery warrant stemming from an incident that occurred in December 2017.

According to Cmdr. Lindell Smith of the Artesia Police Department, Chavez was taken into custody without incident after engaging with a negotiator. No injuries or property damage were involved.

Chavez was transported to the Eddy County Detention Center on the battery warrant, where he is being held without bond. Smith says additional charges connected to today’s incident are pending.
